plastics industry - unlike competitors,
whose machines were initially targeted at the wood industry, and only
much later adapted for use with plastics. The action of CMG's machines
was different as well: rather than
crushing the material, the granulators
built for plastics were designed with a
cutting action, allowing for greater
precision and higher quality results.
This focus on plastics also opened
the door for new business opportunities. Always alert to market
trends, Martelli saw that the fledgling plastics recycling industry was
lacking in strong and dependable
equipment. Deciding this was a
promising area for the granulator
business, the decision was made to
focus on shredders and granulators
for the plastics industry.
Today, the company produces a
wide range of high performance and
high capacity shredders and granulators - up to 6000 kg/h - specifically
tailored to the various needs of the
plastics industry. CMG has built a
broad customer base in Europe,
America, the Middle East and Asia,
which is served via an extensive distribution network across the globe.

gential cutting system that, due to
the geometry optimizes energy consumption and granulator throughput,
while minimising noise and dust. Different rotor configurations are available, depending on the material to be
ground. The machines are designed
for beside-the-press operations and
central use, for in-line and off-line
grinding, but all - large and small -
feature the characteristic rugged,
bolted design that makes it possible
to take apart for servicing - even
years later, said Marco Bellotti, director of business development at CMG.
"That quality is extremely important at CMG," he added. He pointed
to the area in the production hall reserved for processing steel. "The
steel must be correct. We buy bars
from the foundry and cut these to
size for delivery to our supplier, to
ensure the rotors are built from the
steel we specify."

The company has developed granulators for injection moulded products
ranging in size from bumpers to electronic components; for extrusion
films; thermoformed products; bottles, containers and pipes and profiles, to name but a few. CMG has
also developed specific granulators
for wire and cable recycling equipped
with a separation system to separate
out the metal particles from the plastic granules.

surance is in place. "We check 100%
of the pieces that go in the cutting
chambers of our granulators. Everything is numbered with an identification number and documented for full
traceability," Bellotti explained.
Production takes place on 'islands'
where specific products are assembled. "For example, we produce single-shaft granulators for customers
who need the big dimensions of the
feed inlet to handle large-sized items,
but who don't need the throughput
of a big, powerful machine. This also
reduces the energy consumption."
Demand for soundproofed machines is rising steadily, said Bellotti.
"It used to be around 20%, but this
has steadily grown - we now soundproof 50-60% of the machines we
sell. The soundproofing does not help
against the dust - that is handled via
a special suction system."
The company produces modular
dust separation and removal systems
that subsequently release filtered air
into the work environment, for independent operation or interfaced with
the granulator or shredder.
CMG has also kept pace with the
digitisation trend: all units produced
by the company today offer the networking and connectivity capabilities demanded in an Industry 4.0
environment.

n March of this year, CMG America Inc. was acquired
by Universal Dynamics Inc., the Fredericksburg, Virginia-based unit of global auxiliary equipment company Piovan Group.
CMG America, based in Clio, Michigan, has been a
wholly owned subsidiary of CMG SpA since 2012. It has
more than 12,000 units installed in the United States.
CMG's products will be manufactured at Piovan's US
headquarters in Fredericksburg, said Stephen Nunn,
president of Piovan North America. The 110,000-squarefoot building opened in October and houses operations
for Universal Dynamics, or Una-Dyn, the US auxiliary
equipment maker Piovan has owned since 2008.
CMG's size-reduction group of products will be marketed in the US under the Piovan brand, Nunn said.
"But we had already been working with CMG for the
past year at our site in Fredericksburg site on the production of its equipment and distribution of spare parts
throughout the United States. It's a formalisation of that
relationship."
Parent company Piovan SpA is based in Santa Maria
di Sala, Italy. The company has a 20% equity investment
in CMG SpA, with potential plans to acquire 100%.
"So far, that has been the objective with all of our
acquisitions," Nunn said of the group's goal to become
a majority shareholder.
In September 2018, Piovan purchased an additional
25% stake in Italian subsidiary Penta srl. The company
now owns 90% of the materials handling company,
though it has held a majority stake since 2015.
Companies in the Piovan Group currently include
Una-Dyn, Fdm, Aquatech, Penta, Progema and Energys.
