Milliken debuts new technologies for improved PP
Milliken & Co. has announced
the launch of two new products, expanding its considerable portfolio
with new additive technology for
polypropylene impact copolymers
(PP ICPs), and recycled polypropylene, which the company is marketing under the name DeltaMax, and
with the latest member of the Hyperform HPN family of nucleating
agents.
Prem Patel, Milliken's global
business development manager for
plastics additives, said DeltaMax is
a breakthrough that took five years
of research to develop.
"DeltaMax solves a long-standing
unmet need in the polypropylene
industry where the market has
been seeking higher impact PP
plastics at higher melt flow rates,"
he explained. "To achieve PP with
better impact properties meant
losing the ease of processing of
the material. DeltaMax extends
the performance boundaries of
PP, simultaneously improving both
impact and melt flow in PP impact
copolymers and recycled resins
and broadening the range of applications for these materials."

material to be processed at lower

"The modifier is added at the
press," Patel said. "It takes just seconds. Converters use less energy,

less resin as well as, for example,
less back pressure."
The new modifier will also enable more use of post-consumer
recycled PP as it will optimize the

melt flow and impact properties
of this material to better meet the
needs of converters.

ing agents "increases stiffness but
maintains impact performance,"
said Bhavesh Gandhi, global product line manager for Hyperform for
Milliken Chemical.
"Only very low loadings are required, so impact performance
is really not affected. Also, thinwalled applications are possible.
Improving the heat deflection temperature of PP, means the parts are
stable at higher temperatures and
therefore suitable for applications
in, for example, automotive and
appliance parts and microwavable
food packaging," Gandhi said.
He also pointed out that the
higher stiffness of the material and
improved properties promoted intermaterial replacement, for example, with PP replacing PS in applications where this formerly would
not have been possible.
"Small appliances that generate
high temperatures, such as coffee
makers and electric kettles, can
use high-crystalline PP enhanced
with the Hyperform HPN-715 agent
instead of more expensive engineering thermoplastics to achieve
higher wattages or incorporate
thinner-wall parts," he explained.
