Indian masterbatch producer
Rajiv Plastics Industries Pvt. Ltd.
is mulling a facility in the United States, as almost one-fifth of
its production from two plants
in India is shipped to the North
America.
"Around 20 percent of total
capacity exports to the U.S. and
Canada, and it is good business
sense to have presence near to
the customer in the key market,"
said Director Hemant Minocha in
an interview at the recent Plastindia 2018 show in Gandhinagar,
India.
Minocha declined to share details like location, capacity and
investment but said the company plans to decide on the U.S.
plant "in the next six to eight
months."
Currently, the Mumbai-based
company operates two plants in
Silvassa and Pune, spread over
30,000 and 45,000 square feet,
respectively, with cumulative
capacity of 66.1 million pounds a
year. Domestic and export markets are split roughly equally.
In North America, he said the
company mainly supplies masterbatches for segments like engineering plastics and the appliances and automotive industries.
"We now have a new range
having application in the food
packaging segment, targeting
specifically the North American
market," he said.
As part of its expansion in India, it is also building a third,
large plant spread over an area

is, in a word, fantastic. We are a
small but focused group of plastics experts with a great group of
growth investors behind us and
let us do things right. Everything
we have done so far has turned
out to be a winning strategy.
I have now had a lot of exposure to the ins and outs of the
M&A world and have had the
privilege of learning from Brian
Jones [former Nypro CEO who is
now with Westfall] about this new
aspect of plastics - for me.
Q: What sort of prep work
can you do for a trade show like
NPE?
Shaffer: We would normally
start more than a year in advance
to establish the goals, theme, audience, strategy and many other
aspects to maximize the costs
and efforts. The NPE costs a lot
but, particularly for a "new kid,"
it is essential. Unfortunately, we
are only six months old, so we
had to settle for a small space.
Q: What do you think a typical day at the show will be like
for you?
Shaffer: I am hopeful that we
will have a number of people
seeking us out because of all the
publicity that we have enjoyed
over the last months. I suspect it
will be an extremely busy time.
It is always a little like a class reunion and a great selling oppor-

of 120,000 square feet in Silvassa.
The new plant would have
a standalone capacity of 66.1
million pounds a year, roughly
doubling installed capacity to
around 132.2 million pounds a
year when all three plants are
operating. It expects the new Silvassa facility to open by June.
"We are initially spending $5
million in the new plant ... and
earmark another $5 million investment, [with the] majority in
the new plant, besides the upgrade of the two existing plants
in the next two years," he said.
Rajiv Plastics has a dedicated product application and research center based in Mumbai,
with a complete range of polymer testing equipment.

tunity at the same time.
Q: What do you think will be
the main talking points at NPE
this year?
Shaffer: I think that the emphasis will be connectivity of the
molding operations at all levels
of manufacturing. Traceability and better quality and faster
product changes should be a hot
topic - again.
Q: What are you excited
about seeing?
Shaffer: New developments in
material handling and preparation.
Q: How will you gauge whether this show is successful,
whether the trip was worthwhile?
Shaffer: I already know that it
will be a success because we are
a new name in the market and
have already generated a lot of
excitement, but the fact is that
you won't understand the impact
of a trade show for at least a year.
Q: What's your strategy for
networking? Do you enjoy it?
Shaffer: The strategy for networking is a combination of the
old-school connections over the
years and the use of social media
such as Twitter, Facebook and
LinkedIn.
Q: Do you do anything for fun
at the show, or is it all work all
the time?
Shaffer: It is mainly work, but
the social events in the evenings
and seeing old friends is always
tremendous.
