K exhibitors present advances in caps and closures

Rüti, Switzerland-based PackSys
Global AG, a member of Brückner
Group, desisted at the September
2022 Drinktec beverage industry
fair in Munich from presentation
of its new IML+ machinery for
production of labeled packaging
tubes in single PE material. Instead,
it focused entirely on new
machinery for " tethering " caps to
bottles. This emphasis was in view
of a EU Directive 2019/204, requiring
as from 2024 that caps remain
attached on plastic beverage containers
up to 3 liters.
A continuous compression
molding (CCM) line ran at the
booth of Imola, Italy-based machinery
producer Sacmi Imola
S.C. (Hall 13, Booth A63). It molded
caps in a 48-cavity patented
" COOL+ " mold with a cycle time of
2.3 seconds. Sacmi said its Smart
Pack product and control kit on
the CCM 48SD had contributed,
compared with previous CCM line
versions, to 20 percent reduction
in specific energy consumption,
down to 0.35 kWh/kg for the 2.12gram,
28-millimeter-diameter
carbonated soft drink caps, representing
34.1 tonnes per year
lower CO2 footprint.
The caps were molded in Lumicene
M5520 M, a high density
polyethylene from Brussels-based
TotalEnergies Petrochemicals &
Refining (Hall 6, Booth E20). This
bimodal HDPE contains a slip
agent and can be processed at 2045°C
lower temperature than conventional
HDPE but also enables
caps to be molded with 10 percent
faster cycle time and 15 percent
lower energy consumption.
Smart Pack provides real-time
adjustment to ensure precise
molding. A particular Smart
Pack feature was a CVS 152 B
computer vision system online
cap control. It inspected sides
and planarity at six checkpoints
with nine high-resolution color
cameras. CVS21 software analyzed
the results.
Smart Pack features include
control and adjustment of plastic
pellet feeding, mold temperature
control, monitoring
the hydraulic system, automatic
color change and incorrect resin
detection with an algorithm developed
and patented by Sacmi.
The CCM 48D line included
a SFM 12D slitting and folding
machine and a PFMC pull-force
measurement machine checking
tamper-evident and
tethering
band cuts. Sacmi displayed examples
of caps in innovative materials,
such as cellulose-filled
HDPE and polypropylene,
wood-fiber-reinforced PP and
cork-filled polyolefins.
Eschlikon, Switzerland-based
cap molder Corvaglia Mould AG
(Hall 12, Booth B36-02) tethered
caps at Drinktec 2022, the result
of extensive research. Many Corvaglia
tethered caps are already
in commercial use. The company
is particularly proud of its
claimed worldwide first commercial
aseptic 38-mm-diameter cap.
Corvaglia's
adaptive flexband
injection mold technology
achieves a good compromise
between the needs of beverage
fillers and consumers, as well as
being able to ensure production
Krones has
developed
SmartMat
equipment
to test
tethered
caps like
the one

An all-electric drive e-cap
2440/380 injection molding
machine ran at the booth of
Schwertberg, Austria-based
Engel Austria GmbH (Hall 15,
Booth B42/C58). The 380 tonnes
clamping force machine molded
" 29/25 " HDPE caps weighing
1.3 grams with 124.8 grams shot
weight in a 96-cavity mold. The
line was equipped with an up to
400 caps per minute IMDvista
WFS Waterfall Sorter Compact.
A PAC-E 350-2000 injection
molding machine, which is due
for market launch in mid-2023,
as the first in the PAC-E series,
molded caps on the booth of
Schwaig, Germany-based Sumitomo
(SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery
GmbH (Hall 15, Booth
D22). SHI Demag says the PAC-E
melts together features of the
fast hybrid drive El-Exis packaging
applications machine and
the injection performance of Intelect
all-electric machines.
The line runs at K 2022 but
uses Eltex HD5211EA-B HDPE.
Aachen, Germany-based Intravis
GmbH (Hall 11, Booth A56)
supplied a cap feeder and a Capwatcher
Q-Line, which monitors
and controls up to 280,000 closures
per hour with up to seven
cameras, aiding tracing by reading
and sorting caps according
to the mold cavities in which
they are molded.
Neutraubling, Germany-based
stretch blow molding and beverage
filling machinery producer
Krones AG (Hall 9, Booth C29)
is indirectly involved with tethered
caps, which is why it displayed
a 360-degree SmartMat
tethered caps inspection system
at Drinktec 2022.
all-electric machine +
temperature control +
intelligent assistance =
67 % energy savings
Be the first. Be efficient.
Your situation:
Energy prices are exploding and electricity
suppliers are adjusting their tariff s upwards.
But you as a company cannot raise your
prices from one day to the next. Under these
circumstances, your calculations could be
ruined.
The solution from ENGEL:
We don't just look at the injection moulding
machine, but the entire system. The combination of
temperature control, intelligent device communication
and smart process control leads to maximum
effi ciency. Up to 67% energy can be saved compared
to a hydraulic injection moulding machine with a
constant pump and conventional temperature control.
