NGR looks to the future with P:React technology

It's been more than a decade
since Next Generational Recyclingmaschinen
GmbH fi rst developed
the company's liquid
state polycondensation recycling
process for PET.
But the Feldkirchen, Austriabased
company said demand for
the technology continues to grow
as recyclers around the world
seek to capture more and more
used PET and recycle the material
for high-end applications.
Amid the current sustainability
push being championed by
brand owners, NGR continues to
improve its P:React brand of LSP
recycling machinery, increasing
both throughput as well as the
underlying technology, company
offi cials said at an Oct. 19 news
conference at the K show.
Any talk about LSP can get pretty
technical pretty quickly, but
the bottom line is that P:React
melts PET while using a heavy-duty
vacuum to decontaminate the
material. The vacuum process
condenses PET in the melt phase,
and this condensation increases
the intrinsic viscosity, or quality,
of the material.
NGR's P:React system can take
in a wide range of used PET, including
fl
ake, manufacturing
scrap and even fi bers, the company
said.
Using LSP technology allows for
a greater use of the end product
that comes from the process, CEO
Gerhard Ohler said while at the
booth. " With this process, we can
get to higher IV values in general.
And the purity increases to levels
that allows ... [companies] to enter
segments where even a higher
degree of purity is demanded for.
We're really talking about the premium
end here. A high-end application
that also should be possible
by using the LSP technology. "
Creating a more premium output,
thanks to that ability to
control IV values through the
LSP process, means that brand
owners and converters can think
about higher-end applications for
products, including packaging,
Ohler said.
" Ultimately, it's the applications
that the customers have in mind
and the long-term thinking, of
course is a very strategic thinking
from their side, " he said, regarding
the " opportunities that can
open up with a purer product -
put it that way. "

" It is not only packaging. But
we are also thinking about other
industries, " the CEO said.
Such as?
" I can't say more. But it's clearly
more than the regular applications, "
Ohler said.
Competing technologies can
satisfy today's standards when
it comes to recycled PET applications,
but Tobias Huber, head
of marketing for NGR, said his
company's offerings are ready
for the future.
" What about the standards
of tomorrow? We have to think
about getting cleaner and cleaner
and cleaner. When you clean up
materials when it's liquid, there is
a much bigger surface [to remove
contamination].
You
really have
the possibility
of
getting the
material
much cleaner in a shorter time, "
Huber said. " We think LSP technology
will be the future. "
Günther Klammer is chief
technology offi cer for NGR and
was at the company's gathering
Oct. 19. He said demand for
NGR's LSP technology is strong
these days due to price and
availability of PET.
" At the moment it's going
straight up, " he said. " All over the
world, I'd have to say. "
NGR's LSP technology allows for a greater use of the end product.
