Mundhra extends
masterbatch business

Business with South Korean
electronics giant Samsung has
led India's Mundhra Masterbatches
to open a new facility in
the southern part of the country.
The
Delhi-based
company,
which has three facilities in
northern India, opened the new
plant in Chennai in August.
" We have opened the fourth
unit in Chennai to serve our
client Samsung, " said Abhishek
Mundhra, director of sales.
" Ten percent of the production
goes to Samsung and rest to the
South Indian market as it's a big
market for engineering compounds. "
The
company is part of a wave
of Indian masterbatch makers
that say they are expanding to
meet demand in the domestic
market and to explore exports.
The
company's
invested
about 70 million rupees
($860,000) in the first phase in
Chennai, with another 60 million
rupees ($737,000) planned
in the second phase, as orders
pick up.
" We made all the investment
through internal accruals, " he
said.
Mundhra said the new plant
will give it more capacity to target
exports to Africa, the Middle
East and Southeast Asia.
" We were focusing on catering
to the huge domestic market,
but now with the Chennai
plant starting commercial production,
exporting is also on
the radar, " he said.
He called the plant a " modern
and high-tech " unit with machinery
imported from the U.S.,
Germany and India.
Collectively, the company's
four plants have a production
capacity of 17,500 metric tons a
year on 15 manufacturing lines.
The Chennai facility is starting
with two lines and plans to
add two more in the next six
months. It will have capacity of
9,600 tonnes per year when the
additional two lines are operating,
he said.
Mundhra said the company is
also setting up a compounding facility
in Bawal, an industrial area
near Delhi, and expects it to be
operating by the middle of 2023.
The company, which is part of
a larger group, first forayed into
masterbatch production just
over a decade ago in 2011 with
a site in Delhi.
It added a second plant, also
in Delhi in 2014, and a third factory
in Sonepat, in the northern
Indian state of Haryana, in 2018.
The Sonepat plant is its biggest.
The company said it's been
growing about 35 percent annually
and is targeting 10 billion
rupees ($122 million) yearly
turnover.
Mundhra said it's also planning
a big-ticket investment in
plastics recycling next year.
" Plastics recycling is emerging
as the next big thing in the
country,
and we
are working on
a strategy to establish
as a major
brand in plastic recycling
with plans
of setting up multiple
recycling sites

different parts
of the country in the next decade, "
he said.
The company claims to be the
only masterbatch
producer
country
in
the
to make
its materials with
32 different polymer
carriers and
maintains 500 different
types of raw
materials in immediate
supply.
" We are the largest producer
of antimicrobial masterbatches
under the specialty additive
category, " he said.
India has about 30 big masterbatch
producers in the organized
sector, made up of registered
companies that pay taxes,
and they account for about 40
percent
of
the
market.
The
market's estimated to be about
100,000 metric tons a month,
with a value of about 100 billion
rupees ($1.2 billion) a month.
