LyondellBasell invests
in recycling capacity

LyondellBasell
Industries has
continued its string of recycling
moves by forming a joint venture
to build a mechanical recycling
plant in India.
Houston-based LBI is forming
the JV with Shakti Plastic Industries,
which ranks as India's largest
plastic scrap recycler and
waste collection company.
The plant will be able to reprocess
rigid packaging post-consumer
waste and produce 50
kilotons (more than 100 million
pounds) of recycled polyethylene
and polypropylene per year. Offi -
cials said that amount equals the
single-use plastic waste produced
by 12.5 million people.
Offi cials said the new plant will
be India's largest plastics recycling
facility. It's expected to open in late
2024. LBI will market recycled products
produced by the JV, adding volume
to its Circulen Recover range of
existing PE and PP materials to help
meet increasing demand by Indian
processors and brand owners for
recycled polymer materials.
" The proposed [JV] will allow
us to address the issue of plastic
waste in the second most
populated country in the world
and expand our circular polymer
product offering to India, " Yvonne
van der Laan, LBI executive vice
president, circular and low-carbon
solutions, said.

forefront in India taking signifi -
cant steps to recycle rigid plastic
waste, which supports the government
initiative to reuse recycled

fi rst circularity center is estimated
to be $100 million.
A fi nal decision on the project will
be made early next year, with commercial
startup expected in 2024.

and Low-Carbon Solutions business

growth of LBI's Circulen-brand
renewable and circular products
and will accelerate development
of scalable sustainable and circular

has more than 20 years of industry
experience and has been with
LyondellBasell since 2019.
" By setting up the new organization,
we're really addressing
what demand owners want, " she
said. " They want recycled material
to have the same performance
as virgin resin. "

In an Oct. 20 interview at K
2022, van der Laan said that new
recycling locations are part
of
LBI's plan " to partner with advanced
facilities to take waste out
of landfi lls. "
" We need to be where the waste
is, " she added. " It's important that
we address circular needs with infrastructure
and investments. "
The Indian JV continues a
busy year in recycling for LBI. In
Germany, the fi rm has an agreement
with 23 Oaks Investments
to create a new JV venture called
Source One Plastics to build and
operate a plastic waste sorting
and recycling plant. That location
will provide plastic feedstock to
an LBI chemical recycling facility
in Wesseling, Germany.
LBI also plans to work with
Genox Recycling to build a recycling
plant in Zhaoqing, China,
that's expected to begin operations
next year. The facility will use
mechanical recycling equipment
to process post-consumer plastics
that will be sold under the Circulen
Recover product line by LBI.
In
Houston,
LBI
is
partnering
with Exxon Mobil Corp. and
chemical recycler Cyclyx International
to build the Cyclyx Circularity
Center. The plant will to
produce 150 kilotons (330 million
pounds) of plastic feedstock per
year, supplying ExxonMobil and
LBI advanced recycling projects
as well as mechanical recycling
markets. Total investment for the
LBI launched the Circulen line
in 2021. The materials currently
are focused on high density PE
and PP and can be made via mechanical
recycling, molecular recycling
or by using recycled content
material. LBI's pilot plant in
Ferrara, Italy, is in development.
In mid-2021, LBI and resin makers
Dow Inc. and Nova Chemicals
Corp. joined with Closed Loop
Partners to launch a $100 million
investment fund to help fi nance
recovery and recycling of PE and
PP in the U.S. and Canada. The
group aims to fund projects that
recycle more than 500 million
pounds of both post-consumer
and post-industrial plastics over
its 10-year lifespan.
LyondellBasell is a major global
supplier of PE and PP resins and
also ranks as North America's largest
plastics compounder. The fi rm
posted sales of $46.2 billion in 2021.
