Lindner Recyclingtech GmbH
had a decision to make as
COVID-19 was causing global
disruptions around the world.
After planning for a new manufacturing
facility for plastic recycling
machinery since 2018,
the company from Spittal an der
Drau, Austria, moved forward
in the early days of the virus
with the €48 million project that
opened this summer.
" I think from today's point of
view, it was one of the best decisions
we've ever made, " Managing
Director Michael Lackner
said. " We started basically in
the middle of the [COVID] crisis.
... We believed the circular
economy would still increase
and after the [COVID] crisis it
would come back. "
And, well, the company was
TECHNOLOGY TO THE POINT
right. Lackner and other Lindner
employees had just wrapped
up presentations regarding new
machinery the company unveiled
in the firm's outdoor pavilion
at K 2022 when he took
some time to talk about the construction
project.

" All of the construction companies
had not much work. The
raw material prices for concrete,
steel were very low at the
time. Everybody was willing to
work with us, " he remembered.
With large parts of the economy
shut down in the early days
of the virus, and before raw material
prices skyrocketed for some
products, construction companies
were clamoring for work. So
Lindner moved ahead with the
project that drastically changed
the company's manufacturing
approach and dramatically increased
capacity in the process.
Lindner, at its previous manufacturing
headquarters located
about five minutes from the new
site, did not have a streamlined
manufacturing setup, instead
using space just as operations
had evolved over time. But the
new site utilizes an assembly
line approach and relies on automation
including robots to
manage some of the work.
The result is the new location
now has the capacity to construct
340 machines a year, and
Lindner estimates that number
will increase to 500 as the new
facility becomes more efficient
over time. This compares to
the approximately 280 units the
old manufacturing site could
produce in a single year. Lindner
also has been able to significantly
cut lead and delivery
time once an order is placed.
And while automation can
cause a loss of jobs at some companies,
the move into a larger
facility with additional capacity
means that Lindner already has
added about 100 positions to help
with the growth. Employment
now stands at about 400 workers.
" We are proud of our employees,
some of whom spent more
than a year preparing for the production
move. Not an easy job.
Starting up of the new automation
and robotics systems as well
as the fl ow production is going
very well, " owner Manuel Lindner
said in a statement when the
new facility was announced.
Lindner wanted to stay in Central
Europe with its new facility
and ultimately decided to stay
in the same town as the firm is
in a desirable location in southern
Austria near the border with
Italy, Lackner said.
" It's a very nice location. It's
a location where other people
make their holidays. And we are
happy to work there, " he said.
Lindner, as part of the company's
K show presentation, emphasized
improvements to the
company's Micromat HP series
shredders, which now came in
a larger 2,500 horsepower size.
The company also showed off
its new Jupiter BW series that
" enables precise,
true-to-theparticle
shredding of fi lm fractions, "
the company said. This
new equipment also reduces fi ne
pieces by 44 percent while creating
consistent particle size that
can be effectively sorted through
near infrared technology.
