W. Müller tackles color
for recycled containers

While the use of post-consumer
resin in plastics has become a
necessity in some applications, it
doesn't take away from the fact
that the material is not the most
aesthetically pleasing.
" Most recycling material is
gray, " said Varinia Lück, technical
center director at German blow
molding specialist W. Müller EBM
Technology. " When
you use only one layer,
you end up with
gray bottles. No matter
how much it is
colored, it still looks
gray. "
At K 2022, W. Müller
offered a solution
that takes away the
gray and provides some color to
a high-quality plastic bottle. The
company presented a three-layer
extrusion unit that sandwiches an
inner layer of post-consumer material
between exterior layers of
virgin material. The outer layers
can be colored without any loss of
appearance even with the duller
recycled material in the middle.
The process, called ReCo3,
melts the post-consumer material
through use of a fi lter on
an extruder that uses a screen
changer to allow the recycled
material to be processed quickly.
The three-layer concept is gaining
advocates. Consumer goods
giant Unilever plc is using Müller
extrusion machines to create bottles
for its Dove personal care
brand, said Jens Schlueter, president
of W. Müller USA Inc., based
in Agawam, Mass.
The company also is designing
extruders that can provide
a clear layer on the outside of
the package, a colored second
layer and an interior layer using
post-consumer resin, Lück said.
That creates a glossier look especially
useful for cosmetics producers,
she said.
" In the cosmetics industry, appearance
is everything, " Schlueter
added. " But there is also a
need to add a layer of recycled
material. "
The new extrusion equipment
units can be installed in several
formats. The company, based in
Troisdorf-Spich,

Germany, has
vertical

that save
space and allow for
equipment to be retrofi
tted and upcycled,
Schlueter said.

with nine employees.
He said that about 1,500 Müller
extrusion heads are in the U.S.,
a healthy percentage of the 4,500
heads installed globally. The
company is managed by siblings
Brigitte and Christian Müller, after
being founded by their parents
in 1976.
The company also is fi nding
other applications for its extrusion
blow molding equipment,
Schlueter said. Those include
intravenous bags for medical
applications that can be extruded.
IV bags are more traditionally
welded together from two
sheets, but that leads to issues
with leakage, Schlueter said. The
blow molded option eliminates
that issue, he said.
W. Müller recently rebranded
its company name globally to W.
Müller EBM Technology and shifted
its global operations to one
name. The company has updated
its website under the banner
" Truly Performing " and is marketing
its applications as achieving
the perfect parison.
