Madrid-based additive supplier
Tolsa SA launched a new
masterbatch version of its
ADINS-brand additives for fl ame
retardancy in ethylene vinyl acetate,
rubber formulations, thermoplastic
elastomer/thermoplastic
urethane and CPE in the
wire and cable market.
" Last year we got some feedback
from our clients, "
Almudena Vidal, marketing
manager for
Tolsa's industrial business
unit, told Plastics
News. " Because of the
[powder] characteristic
of our [additive]
... and because of the
quantity of the dosages
[1-5 percent in commonly used
formulations], the dispersion ...
is sometimes diffi cult. "
Tolsa's solution was to " complement "
its portfolio with a
masterbatch based in silicone,
Vidal said.
" It's being well received in the
market, " she said, with recent
sales of the product in Israel and
Morocco.
Tolsa also recently opened several
new distribution outlets in Europe
and Asia, as it expects growth
in China and Poland. It's also seen
growth in sales in North and South
America and South Africa.
Earlier this year, the company
said it is developing new products
within its ADINS brand in
nylon matrices for applications
in electronics, automotive, textile
and transportation markets,
an Aug. 11 news release said.
Through testing of the nylon
matrices using a range of ADINS
products, Tolsa said it reduced
total heat release levels more
than 20 percent compared with
its competitors.
" ADINS fl ame retardancy is not
a common fl ame retardant by itself, "
Vidal said. " We complement
the formulas of our clients in order
to make it effi cient against
the fi re with clear objectives. "
Tolsa's ADINS additives are an
alternative to antimony trioxide,
a widely used FR additive that is
under regulatory study due to
toxicity and carcinogenicity concerns,
the release said.
TOLSA SA
" Our unique FR technology
continues to expand, and we see
continuing growth
for ADINS synergists
in a wide range of
systems that require
the highest

dards of fl ame retardancy, "
Vidal said in
the release. " Our materials
... are highly
versatile and can be
fi ne-tuned to meet the high-performance
needs of formulators
and end users. "
" In addition, the variability of
ATO prices and supply issues
have generated additional concerns
among end users, " the release
said. " Therefore, there is
a need for safer synergists like
ADINS that can reduce the ATO
dosage without damaging performance
and processability. "
The additives can help to reduce
up to 50 percent, or eliminate the
ATO content from formulations,
in PVC or PP matrices when combined
with fl ame retardant systems
like ATH or MDH. The products
also reduce dripping.
The company also offers three
different grades of ADINS biocide
products for thermoplastic applications
- two based on silver
and one based on zinc.
Tolsa has more than 32 mining
operations producing sepiolite,
bentonite, attapulgite, phosphates,
peat and marble. The
company has a production capacity
of more than 1.2 million
tonnes.
