Bausano & Figli shows induction
barrel heating, double die head
By David Vink

Turin, Italy-based Bausano &
Figli SpA came to K 2022 with a
Smart Energy System, involving
induction heating applied to extrusion
barrels.
Marketing
Manager
Alessandra
Grosso told Plastics News
that the technique started as a
pilot project in 2018. Two years
ago, it resulted in the sale of the
fi rst two Bausano extruders with
induction barrel heating to Hardenberg,
Netherlands-based PVC
compounder Plastchem BV.
Bausano applied for a patent on
the technology this year, which
Grosso expects to be granted
within two years.
Applying heat directly via induction
reduces barrel heating energy
consumption by 30-35 percent
compared with conventional ceramic
heating cartridges. Grosso
advised, however, that the amount
of energy saved depends on how
the machine is used, the main benefi
t coming from 24/7 use.
" If you shut down the machine
and restart, there is an initial large
surge in energy consumption for a
short period, " she explained.
Also prominently displayed at
K 2022 is a double die head with
2,000 kilograms per hour throughput.
It is made with stainless steel
used for the distribution block and
a special torpedo tip, while other
parts are plated with hard chrome.
The Multidrive system distributes
motion on four or two different
points. The result is low shaft
and gear wear, more power availability
to screws, yet lower energy
consumption.
The next induction heating
step, on which Bausano researchers
are already working,
is heating extruder die heads by
induction instead of resistance
heating. Grosso said this type of
development work benefi ts from
Massimiliano Fenili, who joined
Bausano in 2021 as technical manager.
Fenili previously worked for
almost 25 years at Bergamo, Italy-based
pipe extrusion line producer
Tecnomatic SpA.
Grosso says recycling is not a
prime business for Bausano, but
it has developed a new E-GOR
machine, on display at K, aimed
mainly at in-house recycling
of pipe scrap. This extruder is
equipped with induction barrel
heating, as well as triple fi ltration
and underwater granulation.
South America is a strong market
for Bausano extruders for
wood plastic compounds (WPC),
mainly based on PVC. Bausano is
working on 70 percent natural-fi -
ber-reinforced polypropylene,
too, for the U.S. market.
Bausano R&D engineer Marco
Masiero said WPC based on a
polymer base of polylactide acid
is a subject of research work in
Alessandra Grosso,
Bausano & Figli SpA
marketing manager, said
the Italian equipment
maker is making plans to
expand in the U.S. within
fi ve years.

But he spoke about challenges
of high crystallinity and a narrow
processing window for PLA.
Foamed PVC window profi les is
another development area where
the large European window profi
le producer Deceuninck is making
trials on some Bausano lines.
Other Bausano recycling projects
include compounding and granulation
of post-consumer and
post-industrial ABS from electronics
equipment, as well as recycled
high density polyethylene bottles.
Grosso said Bausano plans to
set up a plant in the U.S. within
the next fi ve years. Bausano started
to develop the U.S. market
three years ago. An Ohio-based
partner is assisting Bausano. The
U.S. market presently accounts
for €1.5 million in annual sales
for Bausano's Rivarolo Canavese,
Italy, plant alone, out of a worldwide
total of €21 million from
that plant, Grosso revealed. She
stressed Bausano's strength is
custom, tailormade projects involving
a high degree of fl exibility.
