Marl, Germany-based polyetheretherketone
producer Evonik
Operations GmbH focuses on
plastic gears.
Although plastic gearwheels
have mechanical load and temperature
limits, injection molded
gears in Evonik's Vestakeep 5000G
withstand operation in engine oil
at 130┬░ C, the company says.
Unlike metal gears, there is no
post-processing. The lightweight,
energy-effi cient gears can run dry
without lubrication. Especially
important for e-mobility, they
have low noise, vibration and
harshness (NVH).
Evonik measured sound levels
from torque between 5 and
20 newton meters by grease-lubricated
steel and Vestakeep G
worm gears on its gear test rig at
a speed of 3,000 rpm. The PEEK
gears developed 40 to 44 decibels
(dB) noise, while steel gears were
46 to 51 dB.
The FZG machine elements
chair at Munich Technical University
evaluated a hybrid PEEK/
steel gear molded in Vestakeep
5000 G made by Wehingen, Germany-based
Werner Bauser
GmbH with a steel gear partner. It
was tested in a modifi ed transmission
system used in small EVs.
Initial results showed suitable
load capacity. FZG also investigated
Vestakeep 4000 and 30 percent
carbon-fi ber-reinforced Vestakeep
4000 CF30 gears, noting
higher notched impact strength,
lower coeffi cient of thermal expansion
and higher density (1.4
vs. 1.3 grams per cubic centimeter)
with CF30.
Bauser produces hybrid gears
by pressing steel cores or shafts
into plastic gears or through injection
overmolding. The company
is vertically integrated
with designing, optimizing and
molding gears in its own tools,
using a gearwheel test bench.
Bauser molds gears in various of
reinforced, friction-modifi ed and
high-performance plastics.

Victrex Europa GmbH focuses on
PEEK HPG (High Performance Gear)
for high power density, low NVH
gears in EVs and two-wheel e-bikes
with front, rear hub and mid-drive
motors. Global gears program manager
Ralf Weidig will addresses the
subject during Fakuma on Oct. 19.
Victrex says low weight PEEK
spur gears in ICE cars enable an average
of 50 percent lower NVH, including
70 percent less gear whine
and 34-45 percent less gear rattle
in scissor gears with wide open
throttle and up to 70 percent lower
power consumption in e-bikes.
PEEK can also be used to produce
hybrid gears by overmolding other
plastics and composites.

Bieglo GmbH focuses on Dexnyl
R-PEEK 450G recycled PEEK,
showing molded gear examples.
It says melt fi ltration retains many
virgin properties in granulate and
fi nished moldings. Dexnyl granulate
is around 50 percent less expensive
than virgin PEEK.

trade association

e.V. are involved in plastic
gears. One is Eisenbach,
Germany-based F.
Morat & Co. GmbH. The
company started molding PEEK
gears in 1983 and has production
in Germany, Mexico and Poland.
F. Morat has offered fully assembled
gearboxes and complete
drive solutions since 1989 and
module 4 gears since 1999.
Another is PKT Pr├Ązisions-Kunststoff-Teile
GmbH,
a company with 70 injection
molding machines, which molds
gears for window shades and
ring gears for start/stop system
automation. As a micromolding
specialist, PKT presents series
production of gearwheels with
part weight below 0.0006 grams.
The company uses Moldfl ow
analysis and recently installed
TomoScope XS 160 computer tomography
test equipment from
Giessen, Germany-based Werth
Messtechnik GmbH.
The third company on the
booth is Ehingen, Germany-based
Gear Motion GmbH, which produces
hybrid plastic gears with
overmolded metal shafts.
