FAKUMA SHOW DAILY
Fakuma means business for Friedrichshafen
By Jim Johnson
Plastics News Staff
When plastics companies descend
on Fakuma - typically
held two out of every three years
- the economic impact is felt well
beyond the walls of the exhibition
halls and the days of the show, according
to the longtime mayor of
Friedrichshafen, Germany.
Andres Brand has led the municipality
since 2009, winning his
second eight-year term in offi ce in
2017. So he has seen been witness
to Fakuma many times over the
years and understands the importance
of the trade fair.
The municipality owns half of
Messe Friedrichshafen GmbH, the
operating company for the facility
that plays host to a variety of
shows each year.
This year alone, there are nearly
three dozen events scheduled
for the conference center covering
a wide variety of topics including
fruit, motorcycles, cake
design, fi shing, board games and,
of course, plastics processing.
Fakuma, the show itself, is
owned by P.E. Schall GmbH &
Co. and will attract tens of thousands
of visitors to Messe Friedrichshafen
for the 28th edition.
Bettina Schall, managing director
of P.E. Schall, with a 4.4 percent
share, is one of several private
citizens and companies that also
own a portion
of Messe Friedrichshafen
GmbH.
" Fakuma
is a
Brand
meeting place
for the international
trade
public, and visitors
make the
journey from
all over the
world. For Fried
r i ch sha f en
and the entire Lake Constance region,
the Fakuma is an important
economic factor, " Brand said in
an email interview.
" Fakuma is of great importance
for local companies, and even
beyond the duration of the event
there is a great deal of activity,
from the hotel and restaurant industry
to the entire retail trade,
trade fair service providers such
as construction companies and
other trades, all the way to transport
companies, " the mayor said.
Friedrichshafen, which is held
during years when the triennial
K Show in Düsseldorf does not
take place, is a natural point for
the
plastics
industry to meet.
That's not only due to the show's
proximity to a concentration of
plastics related businesses in the
region but also other activities
available to fairgoers.
" The location of Friedrichshafen
is also a guarantee for Fakuma's
success because this is where
a strong economic area in the
four-country triangle of Germany,
Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein
is combined with an attractive
range of leisure activities around
Lake Constance, " the mayor said.
" Friedrichshafen is aware of the
great importance of the plastics
processing industry, and there
are also many companies for
whom a visit to Fakuma has been
a must for decades, " Brand said.
Fakuma and Messe Friedrichshafen
are part of the city's
larger economic development efforts,
the mayor said.
" Messe Friedrichshafen strengthens
Friedrichshafen as a business
location. With its national and
international events, it attracts
hundreds of thousands of exhibitors
and visitors to our region
every year. On the one hand, this
brings us a great benefi t for the city
through the indirect profi tability.
But it is also important that Friedrichshafen
can - and does - recommend
itself as a holiday destination
to visitors from all over the
world, " Brand said.
This is the second Fakuma
show since the onset of the coronavirus
pandemic, with the 2020
show being canceled and then a
2021 show taking place before
taking a break last year due to the
K show.
The fi nancial impact of
Fakuma goes beyond the
days that the trade show
takes place, according to the
mayor of Friedrichshafen.

" The pandemic was an exceptionally
challenging time. The ban
on holding events was a tough
blow for us. Nevertheless, we
were also very active during this
time. For example, we organized
a large vaccination center in our
halls and initiated new event formats.
Our trade fair team was -
and is - highly motivated. The
realization of events after the pandemic
has clearly confi rmed that
live meetings are indispensable
for the respective sectors and
we look to the future with confi -
dence, " Brand said.
