DuPont touting new Delrin
formula at Fakuma 2023

Even more than six decades
after the Delrin brand was introduced
to the market, DuPont Co.
continues to regularly develop
new versions of the acetal homopolymer
aimed at specifi c applications.
This
time
around,
the
new
Delrin 51HSE, introduced to the
market just weeks ago, is being
touted by the company for use in
plastic gears for both automotive
and electric bike applications.
Guillaume Doy, global marketing
and demand leader for the
Delrin line, was at the Fakuma
trade show talking about the new
formulation.
Delrin 51HSE is the newest in a
long line of Delrin formulations dating
back to the early 1960s as some
150 versions of the acetal have
been developed over the years.
Substituting
plastic
gears
for metal ones lowers vehicle
weight, leading to lower emissions,
Doy said.
DuPont identifi es what Doy
calls " new market trends " and
It has a very versatile
use. It's used in many,
many different types of
applications: material
handling, conveyor belts,
medical care, sporting
goods, ski bindings. "
Guillaume Doy
DuPont Co.
then sets out to rejigger the formulation
of Delrin to meet the
new needs, he explained.
Changes in automotive mobility
as well as an explosion in
popularity of electric bikes are
creating increased demand for
plastic gears.
The new Delrin provides improved
strength as well as better
protection against material fatigue
and rupture, according to testing.
With the relatively recent release
of the new material, potential
users are now in the testing
and analysis phase of the product,
Doy explained, before deciding
whether they will use Delrin
51HSE in their high-performance
applications.
While DuPont is marketing
Delrin 51HSE for plastic gears,
the company noted the acetal
also performs well in other highstress
applications.
" It has a very versatile use.
It's used in many, many different
types of applications: material
handling, conveyor belts, medical
care,
sporting
goods,
ski
bindings, " Doy said. " Delrin has a
very versatile application. "
News of Delrin 51HSE comes
as the entire Delrin business is
in the process of being sold by
DuPont to TJC LP, an investment
fi rm formerly known as The Jordan
Co., for $11 billion. Delrin
previously was part of DuPont's
Mobility and Materials segment,
most of which was sold to Celanese
Corp. DuPont carved out
the Delrin business from that
deal because Celanese already
has a major presence in acetal.
TJC later struck a deal for 80.1
percent of Delrin, with DuPont
scheduled to receive $1.25 billion
in pre-tax proceeds and a
note for $350 million. DuPont will
retain a 19.9 percent stake in the
Delrin business.
" This transaction is structured
to maximize value for our shareholders,
providing signifi cant
cash proceeds ... to be deployed
in line with our strategic priorities
while providing an opportunity
for DuPont to participate in
future upside potential upon exit
of our retained equity interest in
the Delrin business, " DuPont CEO
Ed Breen said in a statement at
the time the deal was announced.
Ian Arons, a partner with TJC,
said in a statement that Delrin is
" widely recognized as the material
of choice for safety-critical and
high-cost-of-failure applications
across diverse end markets. "
" We are thrilled to have DuPont
as a partner, and we look forward
to working closely with the entire
Delrin team to drive future growth
in the business, " he said.
At Fakuma, the Delrin team is
meeting customers at the booth
of one of its distributors, Biesterfeld
Plastic GmbH, in Hall B4,
Booth 4201.
We are thrilled
to have DuPont
as a partner, and
we look forward
to working closely
with the entire
Delrin team to drive
future growth in the
business. "
