automation

Robots will ultimately need maintenance
and this also underlines how automation
rarely pushes anyone out of a company.
"Someone has to look after the hardware,
lubrication, checking of gaps, braking systems, general systems testing," says Hill.
"With some training, the person who had
been doing basic part assembly on a production line could learn how to take care of
the machine doing their old job."
While both Wittmann Battenfeld and
Sepro Group have support staff working
in the UK, as with most other hardware
providers the companies also offer introductory and advanced training to staff
who will be working with the robots. "If
something goes wrong, the robot will tell
you on the screen. But you need to know
how to solve that issue," says Hill. "We
want people to be as educated as they
want to be about how robotics work."
The UK might have a predominance of
older injection moulding machines, but
times they are a-changing. Hill says that
while Wittmann delivered about 50 machines in 2018, each example had some
type of automation added to support
planned usage.
Is there anything specifically that robots
can't do when it comes to plastics production? Barry Hill says he can't think of anything. Perhaps they can't make a cup of
tea just yet? He laughs and replies: "Good
thing, too, or I'd be redundant!"
