Toray and BASF team up to produce CFRT tape

New CFRT tape combines
Ultramid PA6 with glass or
carbon fibre filler

Toray Advanced Composites and BASF have introduced a new continuous fibre reinforced
thermoplastic (CFRT) tape for applications in the automotive and industrial markets.
Toray is manufacturing the CFRT tapes using Ultramid engineering thermoplastics developed and produced by BASF. The fibre producer will reinforce the Ultramid PA6 resins
with either glass fibre or carbon fibre.
The new product will support development of lightweight structural components. For
example, using the CFRT materials, automotive OEMs can design and produce optimised
components at a lower cost and higher speed.
"By developing innovative lightweight composite material technologies for automotive
applications, this partnership underlines both companies' strong commitment to sustainable solutions," said Jeff DeAlmeida, BASF's North America vice-president for Transportation Industry Performance Materials.

Hasco introduces new mould pressure plates

Hasco has introduced a series of new adjustment plates available in
70 different sizes.
The pressure and adjustment plates include the Z555, Z556 and
Z557 ranges. These allow uniform adjustment of pressure distribution in the mould parting surfaces to allow height differences to be
easily off-set.
Through defined pressure distribution they guarantee precise
mould separation surfaces, preventing related deflection of the cavity plates.
With integrated lubrication grooves, the Z557 plate can be used as
a sliding plate where there are inclined differences in the separation
line.

Engel launches new two-step injection moulding machines

Two-shot moulding helps decrease
cycle times for production of
medical device housings

Engel has developed a two-component injection moulding system to reduce cycle times
for the production of housings for medical devices.
As wall thickness cannot be reduced for stability reasons, conventional one-shot production leaves no opportunity to reduce cycle times. In the two-step process two thin
layers are used, each of which quickly cools.
"The key thing with housing parts is the cooling time," said Dr. Georg Steinbichler, SVP
of Technology R&D at Engel Austria. "Since both injection moulding steps are carried out
at the same time, overall production efficiency increases," he added.
To achieve the very short cycle times, the company used a Hack Formenbau
eight-cavity Vario Spinstack mould in the cleanroom version of its all-electric e-motion
310H/170W/160 combi injection moulding machine. Automation is used to further improve cycle times.

Carmel unveils new LDPE for blown film extrusions

Carmel Olefins has extended the company's range of Ipethene autoclave
LDPE for blown film extrusion with the introduction of Ipethene 4140.
The new LDPE has a very low melt flow of 0.13g/10mins (2.16kg, 190°C).
This provides a very high melt strength and therefore, an excellent bubble
stability. This supports large-diameter blown film bubbles for extrusion and/
or very thick gauge films.
Blown film bubbles of 14 - 18m in circumference have been successfully
extruded and a film thickness of up to 280 microns.
Typical applications include large-diameter agricultural films, shrink hoods
and building films, although any application which required a thick, wide film
can benefit from the new LDPE.
