assembly lines and Industry 4.0 are
mostly speculative. Self-driving cars must
communicate almost instantly to avoid
crashes. Hence the value of C-band for
5G networks.
According to the FCC,
a
length movie
that takes nearly
featuresix
minutes
to download with 4G could
be downloaded in as little as 15 seconds
with 5G. And experts agree that
5G's benefit to industry and transport
will be even greater than it is to individual
consumers gaming or streaming
movies.
Indeed,
the C-band's robust
transmission character and good speed
will make it the high-speed backbone of
industrial 5G.
This band has both fast transmission
speeds and good range between towers.
BALANCING SPEED, RANGE
Lower 5G frequencies (less than 1 GHz)
travel much farther but carry less information.
Higher frequencies (24 GHz to
40 GHz) carry more data faster but have
sharply reduced range around buildings,
in rain or even in high humidity. C-band
5G will reliably link a carrier's network
and should allow for roaming partnerships
with foreign carriers.
The FCC auctioned off a total of 280
megahertz of these midrange airwaves
that are estimated to offer at least 0.5 mile
between towers.
The first 100-MHz block of the spectrum
will be clear of satellite users by the end
of the year and be available in 46 major
markets. The remaining 180 MHz won't
be clear until the end of 2023.
More users and more obstacles in urban
environments mean about 1 mile or less
between towers. Open, sparsely populated
rural areas can stretch that distance
with tall towers at the right frequencies to
as much as 6 miles.
CURRENT TECHNOLOGY
Carriers such as Verizon are already
operating 5G in places such as sports
stadiums, limited urban environments
and private industrial areas on previously
purchased millimeter wave (24 GHz to
300 GHz) frequencies. And although millimeter
wave is low-latency, ultra-reliable
and can carry data from a huge number

Verizon says it has had a plan all along
to optimize its 5G infrastructure footprint,
and C-band makes it easier and more
complete.
" Coverage from C-band will largely
be based on density of current network
infrastructure, " said Koeppe. " Verizon has
spent years densifying our network, building
small cells and macro cells, creating
the largest and most efficient network in
the industry. "
Faster is better, and with C-band, 5G
will get better faster for more users -
from cellphone jockeys to wireless factory
