dates. We need to go through
the eff ort - from a technology
development standpoint
- to develop the capability to
identify materials and bring
them back into our processes;
develop the technology to
use them back in high-performance
parts, and then work
with high-quality leaders like
ITW to basically 'relife' something
back into new materials.
This is true circularity. "
Sustainability is a
journey
continued from page 23
third-party-certified. "
" That way, there's integrity, "
added McDivitt. " We always
strive for third-party validation,
so there's no question of
any cherry-picking or window-dressing. "
McDivitt
continued: " Generally
speaking, I think our industry
needs to lead this eff ort
- that innovation should come
from the industry rather than
from compliance with manIn
recycling, one of the main
challenges is sourcing - how
to secure a consistent supply
of waste to serve as feedstock
and how to collect it. Another
is to develop the capability
to reprocess end-of-life
products destined for landfill
into new applications, 'giving
these materials a new life in
a different form,' as McDivitt
phrased it.
One of the early steps in developing
that capability was
in 2020, with Ascend's acquisition
of Poliblend, a leading
compounder of PA6 and 66 in
Europe. Another, said McDivitt,
was attracting the right talent
- an ongoing challenge.
" We are happy to have people
working with us with the
expertise and experience, as
well as the long-term vision
needed to successfully execute
a project like ReDefyne.
So, with the chemistry knowledge
and experience available
to create high-quality materials,
we are able to bring value
to the market with these materials.
But we are still in the early
chapters of this book that is
being written, " McDivitt said.
From an industry standpoint,
companies across the
value chain are still exploring
the route to more sustainability
and what is the most cost-effective
approach and ultimately
the most environmentally
beneficial way to get there.
" It's a journey the world is
on, " said McDivitt. " And it is
one I am excited about, especially
as we're pushing ahead
proactively instead of just being
reactive. "
