Creating awareness,
hanger for hanger
It has been estimated that some 128 billion plastic hangers are
used worldwide on an annual basis. After use, most end up
in landfill. A young Amsterdam-based startup called Arch &
Hook is now demonstrating that it doesn't need to be this way.
Its mission? To eliminate the use of non-sustainable materials
altogether - full stop. By Karen Laird.

in 2015 as a
fully sustainable
hanger company, " said Cris
Pizzato, Arch & Hook's global
general manager for sustainable
fixtures and furniture. " It
started with the idea of developing
a quality hanger that was
also sustainable, and this led to
the creation of our FSC-certified
wooden hanger programme. "
It also led to a growing
awareness on the part of the
company's founders, themselves
active in the furniture
and fittings industry, of just
how polluting the existing
practices of the fashion retail
industry were, especially when
it came to plastic hangers.
" Just a single large retailer can
easily use 1 million hangers a
year, " said Pizzato. But, as she
pointed out, it is not something
most people think about, which
is precisely what Arch & Hook is
trying to change.
Education is a key part of
that and essential to enable
people to make better choices.
" It starts with awareness. By
making brands and retailers
aware that there is really no
excuse for big corporations
not to look into a sustainable
alternative or to sidestep the
discussion by citing price as

an obstacle. Price, however,
does immediately bring us to a
