Supporting sustainability in
the chemical supply chain
The Chemical Business Association (CBA) has been the voice of the UK chemical
supply chain industry for almost a century. Tim Doggett, CEO of the CBA,
explains how the association supports all chemical supply chain stakeholders and
encourages sustainability.
Pointing the way toward a more
sustainable industry
ability challenges.
This is not a recent commitment
- the association has
been a leading part of the Responsible
Care Programme,
which is the foundation of the
chemical industry's sustainability
commitment, since 1993.
This voluntary global initiative
goes above and beyond legislative
and regulatory requirements,
providing the chemical
supply chain industry with an
ethical framework for the safe
use and handling of chemical
products while seeking ongoing
improvement in occupational
and process safety, emergency
preparedness, community engagement,
safe chemical distribution,
chemicals security, and
environmental performance
across the industry.
In the UK, Responsible Care
C
limate targets are
changing industry.
Sustainability is
at the top of many
agendas - both within the
chemical industry and for external
stakeholders - and it has
already become a crucial competitive
factor. Contrary to belief,
the chemical industry is heavily
involved and instrumental in
finding solutions to help solve
the problems of climate change.
As the world strives to
achieve the global climate
change targets, it also needs to
be able to support a population
that is expected to reach 10 billion
by 2050 and a sustainable
supply chain is imperative in
order to satisfy both these conflicting
needs.
Leading the charge is the
Chemical Business Association
(CBA), which has grown to be
the voice of the UK chemical
supply chain and has provided
unwavering dedication and
consistent support to stakeholders
for nearly a century.
Representing distributors,
manufacturers, traders, warehouse
operators, logistics and
transport companies, as well
as service providers and suppliers
who collectively make up
the complete chemical supply
chain, it has highlighted the importance
of ecological and social
accountability for decades.
As part of its many commitments
to the chemical supply
chain industry, the CBA is a
key player in helping industry
understand the impacts and
opportunities of sustainable
practices and the multiplying
effects and benefits it holds for
industry, society, and the planet.
Driving sustainability
The chemical industry is highly
regulated. When it comes to environmental
issues the chemical
supply chain industry is committed
to the highest levels of
contemporary chemical safety
and environmental protection.
Like all other sectors, it is foTim
Doggett
cused on making considerable
progress towards sustainability
while reducing and minimising
the impact of its operations on
the environment.
The CBA's commitment towards
sustainability includes
focus areas such as proactively
supporting industry with
safe chemicals management,
improving the environmental
safety and impact of chemical
supply chain processes, and
seeking innovative technologies
and solutions to sustaincovers
the whole of the chemical
supply chain, from manufacturers
to distributors and logistics
companies. Compliance with
Responsible Care is mandatory
for all CBA member companies
involved in the trading, distribution,
handling, movement, and
storage of chemicals.
Supporting industry
Another primary role is to lobby
on behalf of members. This is
something it does at the highest
levels and over the years,
industry has benefitted significantly
from the the association's
interventions on a wide
and varied range of subjects,
including recently with respect
to Controlled Drugs, HGV driver
shortages, and UK REACH.
Besides lobbying, the CBA
also offers advocacy, representing
businesses in both Whitehall
and Westminster, as well as
in Brussels, where it has effective
working relationships with
