Sulzer Chemtech, Wageningen Food & Biobased
Research partner on foam development
SULZER CHEMTECH HAS
announced a strategic partnership
with Wageningen Food &
Biobased Research to develop
new methods to produce competitive
bio-based foamed polymers.
These will provide material
properties equivalent to their
fossil-based counterparts while
featuring extremely low environmental
footprints.
The focus will be on the
development of scalable processing
methods, with the aim
of increasing the market share
of cost-competitive bio-based
polymers in diff erent sectors.

The packaging produced by
this partnership will be compostable

The new high-performance

Nexe's fully compostable
coff ee pod
IN A SECTOR where convenience
has consistently
trumped sustainability, Canada-based
Nexe is showing
that it doesn't have to be a
choice between either one
or the other. The company
launched its first Nexe-branded
coff ee product into the
market on 29 July: a premium
fully compostable espresso
Biobased Research will bring
its ample experience in sustainable
innovation, i.e., biobased
resources, chemistry, material
science and technology, while
Sulzer Chemtech will share
its extensive knowledge and
product portfolio for advanced
foaming processes as well as
for the production and purification
of bio-based monomers.
" This partnership is yet another
milestone on Sulzer Chemtech's
journey towards enabling
a circular economy, " said Daniel
Rytz, global head strategy and
technologies at Sulzer Chemtech.
" As the technology leader
to produce polylactic acid, this
joint foam application development
will open up new areas for
bio-based plastics and is a further
step towards achieving our
own sustainability goals. "
Nexe launches sustainable
single-serve espresso pods
pod that breaks down in industrial
composting facilities
in as little as just 30 days, similar
to the time it takes for an
apple core to decompose.
The Nexe pods are compatible
with the popular Nespresso
OriginalLine machines
and are manufactured and
packaged at the company's
operations plant, using environmentally
friendly processes,
including 3D-printing for
prototyping. The pod is made
from a combination of plant
fibre, compostable polymers,
and other compostable materials.
The entire pod is compostable
- no need to separate
the lid, cup, or coff ee.
