RUNWAY REPORT Redken Lace Under Fire Peter Gray heats up the black bob with gold lace patterns. Gals seeking thrills and frills of the fun and flirty type tap designer Betsey Johnson to outfit their fast times out on the town, and the designer never disappoints: It’s always all petticoats, prints and lace injected with the signature Betsey kink. This season’s no different, though the designer has blasted her wares with a darker, edgier feel. Taking this dark turn and pairing it with one of Johnson’s signature style ingredients, lace, lead stylist Peter Gray sets out to create a hairstyle that fulfills this edgier side of the Betsey girl. “I actually have a strip of lace from the clothing that I’m pinning into the hair from ear to ear to create a sort of template,” Gray, who’s working with Redken, explains. He then sprays gold paint over the lace, removes the strip from the hair, and voilà—an intricate, shimmering hair tattoo is left in its wake. “I just watched the Vidal Sassoon documentary, and I wanted to bring back a nice, strong haircut in this vein,” Gray remarks, pointing to the black lacquered bobs that now brandish gold lace imprints. “We’ve seen so much natural hair on the runways—those long, loose styles—it’s nice to see a stronger cut.” To secure the acrylic wigs (courtesy of EasiHair), Gray crafts old-fashioned wig wraps using Redken Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray (, and spritzes a healthy helping of Quick Dry 18 Instant Finishing Spray on the surface of the wigs so that “they don’t slip.” Next, he heightens the bobs’ sheen with Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist, allowing the glossed strands to angle for just as much brilliance as the gold paint. Of this tough-meets-girlie hair tribute, Gray thrills, “I always say Betsey’s all about fun, and this look truly is too!” —Karie L. Frost 11.11 Images: Andreea Angelescu
