RUNWAY REPORT Aveda Girl Meets Boy(ish) A girlish style and a tomboy design meet cute on i li h t l d t b d i t t the Band of Outsiders runway. Edwardian beauty culled from the Australian movie, Picnic at Hanging Rock, meshed with the Pennsylvania Amish: Austere, no? This is lead hairstylist Didier Malige’s vision at Band of Outsiders, yet the tress allure for this show is anything but rigid. “There are two types of girls— those who are feminine and those who are more boyish,” Malige, who’s working with Aveda, says. “And, for both of them, it’s more about the feeling. It’s about the texture of hair.” The texture—matte and ease-evoking—seems fitting for the brand’s schoolgirl-chic wares. For the “girly-girl look,” Malige creates a middle part and then twists sections of hair away from the face as he runs Aveda Brilliant Retexturing Gel ( through the length. He blow-dries the roped sections and allows them to set before raking through them with his fingers to elicit breezy waves. “This style is not about using the tools; it’s about using your product,” he explains. For the boyish design, Malige mists a heavy helping of Air Control Hair Spray from roots to ends for pliability, brushes through with a Mason Pearson brush and then switches to a wide-tooth comb, backcombing from the mid-length to ends— roots untouched. “This helps create grip for the chignon,” Malige notes, which he twists into place at the nape. Of both styles, he zeros in on that oft-used backstage expression: “It’s as if she’s done her hair herself.” But we all know she’ll still need you, her hairstylist, to lead the way. —Karie L.
