STAR STRUCK TrueColors Redken creative consultant for color Tracey Cunningham, who’s about to open her new salon, MECHE, in West Hollywood, California, shares what it’s like to be one of Tinseltown’s most sought-after colorists. What made you become a colorist? My love of hair mostly, and the discovery that I was a gifted colorist. I enjoy making people feel good about themselves through my work—it’s very rewarding. What’s your typical schedule like? Nonstop! Most days, I’m unable to take time and eat lunch because I’m so busy. How does an actor’s schedule, on-set demands, etc., influence the way you approach his or her hair? Many times, celebrities come in with something in mind, and other times they have a role coming up. When the latter is the case, we brainstorm who the character is as a person. An inner-city cop probably wouldn’t have highlights! What do you enjoy doing in your downtime? Relaxing on my couch and catching up on the TV shows I missed or hanging out with my son. Favorite color you’ve created? It would have to be the ombré look I gave Lily Aldridge years back, when she came into the spotlight with Victoria’s Secret. It was an overnight sensation, and is my most requested color to date. Any haircolor horror stories? Not yet. Keeping my fingers crossed! What advice do you have for professionals who’d like to follow a similar path? If you have a passion and a gift, do not waste it. Do whatever you can to make your dreams come true. Also, try to be in the right place at the right time as much as possible! —Alyson Osterman-Kerr Tracey Cunningham Cunningham takes us through some of her top celeb looks. “I tried to keep all these actresses as close to a natural color as possible,” Cunningham explains. “It’s all about taking a woman’s natural color and enhancing it without overdoing it.” Sofía Vergara, 2012 Golden Globes Cameron Diaz, 2012 Oscars Talk about a Colombian bombshell! This gorgeous and natural brunette color fits Sofia perfectly. I love this platinum look for Cameron; it’s a bold hue that still manages to look natural. We couldn’t decide if her hair needed to be touched up before the Oscars, but in the end we decided this color was exactly what the look called for. Charlize Theron, 2011 Young Adult New York premiere Gwyneth Paltrow, 2012 Oscars Charlize is one of the most iconic Hollywood blondes. This color fits her skin tone perfectly. J’adore! Gwyneth is flawless, and I get so many requests for her perfect blonde color. This was such a special day, as I got to hang out with her and touch her up right before she hit the red carpet. Drew Barrymore, 2010 Nylon + Express August Denim Issue Party Emma Stone, 2012 People’s Choice Awards I love this ombré look on Drew—it’s so rock-and-roll and so her! This style is a bit more drastic than your typical ombré, but it fits her wonderfully. Emma has made redheads chic and mainstream again—her brassy shade has become one of the most coveted colors. 48 7.12 Tracey: courtesy of Redken; Sofía: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Entertainment; Cameron: Gregg DeGuire/FilmMagic; Charlize: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images Entertainment; Gwyneth: Steve Granitz/WireImage; Drew: John Shearer/WireImage; Emma: Jordan Strauss/WireImage
