Intercoiffure’s Fall Atelier, held at NYC’s
historic Waldorf Astoria, presented the latest hair, makeup, nail and fashion trends to a crowd of North America’s top salon owners and stylists. Day One kicked off with a hauntingly beautiful “Dia de los Muertos” presentation by the ICA Nouveau team, directed by Perry Monge. Of course, the evening’s thrilling festivities were just a preview of the exciting events to come. Day Two not only saw a welcome from ICA president Lois Christie, an official pinning of new members by ICA VP Maryanne McCormack and the emcee skills of Geno Stampora, but also a milieu of stylish presentations from top pro-beauty artists. This year, ICA went for baroque—1920sinspired looks, that is, as seen in presentations from the ICA Hair Color Council, the ICA Makeup Council, the newly minted ICA Artistic Team (Sherri Jessee, Faatemah Ampey and David Kinigson, led by creative director Mary Brunetti), and the ICA Nouveau group. Other colorful and informative presentations included L’Oréal Professionnel’s Jason Backe and Jennifer MacDougall unveiling of easily translatable celebrity hairstyles and colors. Repêchage’s Shiri Sarfati and Atlanta-based hair designer Steve Hightower highlighted how to achieve all-over beauty in 30 minutes, and the North American Sassoon creative team showcased the latest avant-garde hair fashions. Also, the Evolve artistic team explained how the everyday woman can achieve glamorous, thick locks in a snap; Aloxxi’s Teri Dougherty and Candace Bossendorfer presented hot haircolors; Intercoiffure Cutting Council members Anthony Muti, Andreas Zafiriadis, John Gialluisi and Woody Michleb revealed their fall fashion forecast; and more! Capping off the day’s festivities was Logics spokesperson and educator Gina Khan’s second presentation, “A Celebration of Color,” which was not only a tribute to her native
India, but also her fond farewell from her Hair Color Council creative director post. At the end of the presentation, audience members leapt to their feet, moved by both Khan’s good-bye and by the Indian dancers who swayed and jumped to the song, “Jai Ho!” That evening, a grand gala kept to the ’20s theme. Industry leaders Oribe, ICA fashion director Vivienne Mackinder, Brunetti and Zafiriadis judged a “Great Gatsby Hair & Fashion Contest,” where an entry from Christie Salon & Co. in Bayside, New York, was declared the winner. Topping off the retrofestive evening was “Illuminate,” a presentation by Wella Professionals’ Christopher and Sonya Dove along with Paul Nasrallah that incorporated more Gatsby-derived trends, plus included a theatrical dance presentation worthy of the Broadway stage. On the final day, attendees visited various educational seminars plus bore witness to a captivating CND nail trend presentation, and “Big Tease” hair collection from Mackinder. (Sneak peek on page 98!)
