SALON OF THE New! iCape™ & iApron™ Our innovative smart window™ is designed to protect smart phones & tablets from hair and chemicals in the salon. (patent pending) MONTH Crazy for Keratin Devoted fans flock to Le Salon East for their hair-straightening fix. All salons offer a range of services, but few can call themselves experts in a specific field. Manhattan’s Le Salon East ( is different. This 1,100-square-foot beauty mecca has fast become the go-to spot for Rejuvenol keratin hair treatments ( since opening in 2009. “We perform approximately 1,000 applications each month, which is more than any other New York City salon,” owner Daisy Lee enthuses. Once known as Brazilian straightening, the process first made a splash stateside several years ago and has evolved over time. Critics initially decried its use of caustic chemicals, including formaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen linked to headaches, sore throats and other maladies. Because it so effectively binds keratin molecules together to smooth tresses, formaldehyde is still used in many formulas. At Le Salon East, it’s used in trace amounts. “The permissible OSHA concentration iCape no. 640 iApron no. 740 80 11.12 Photos: courtesy of Le Salon East Le Salon East 220 East 60th Street New York, NY 10022 212.888.2828 limit is .75 parts per million (ppm) based on an eight-hour exposure period, and the Rejuvenol product only contains .27 ppm formaldehyde,” Lee explains. The safety measures don’t stop there. All 27 stylists attend extensive seminars and classes to master Rejuvenol administration techniques. They wear surgical masks, which are also provided to clients, and a high-tech ventilation system keeps fresh air circulating. This modern technology is mirrored in the décor, which blends cutting-edge style with old-world class. Appliances are imported from Europe and Australia, while the sleek black chairs and large frameless mirrors are custom-made in the U.S. Industrial-style light fixtures reflect on a lustrous Italian marble floor. The absence of clutter is soothing—a bonus, since patience is required to complete the average two-hour treatment. Cuts, color (with L’Oréal Professionnel, Wella Professionals and Redken products) and conditioning treatments are also available. But as ecstatic customers continue to rave about keratin’s life-altering effects, its future at Le Salon East looks ever brighter. “We soon hope to expand our space and offer educational workshops, so that consumers can continue learning more about this fantastic product,” Lee smiles. —Francesca Moisin
