REPORT Catwalk by TIGI Scary/Pretty What happens when you mesh a ghostly geisha, Japanese wood nymphs and Tiny Tim together? Just ask the beauty team behind the look at Chris Benz’s spring 2013 presentation. “Everything is based on Chris’ 36 Ghostly geishas and Tiny Tim inform a crinkled coif at Chris Benz. travels to Japan. Over there, Tiny Tim is a cult figure,” Catwalk by TIGI lead hairstylist Nick Irwin explains of the one inspiration that seems to be the odd man out. “And he saw these zombie-esque vacant girls there that he loved,” he continues. Hence, the specter factor. “He had so many references, but I was able to get about four or five of them into the hair look,” he laughs. So it’s no wonder that every angle of the hairdo seems to uncover a new element. First, Irwin creates a zigzag parting, where the zigs and zags are miniscule, yet noticeable. Then, he draws upon a childhood trick every girl remembers fondly: He weaves tiny braids around the entire head that he’ll later unfurl to reveal 2.13 kinked texture. “When I was a kid, the girls I went to school with would do this before they went to bed, and then wake up with this crimped style,” he says. “Of course, we can’t go to bed here, so we’re spraying the braids with Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Work It Hairspray ( and then running a flat iron over the braids to lock in the ‘crinkle’ and speed up the process!” Behind each model’s right ear Irwin crafts a larger braid that he’s leaving “as though we forgot it.” After brushing out the smaller plaits, he twists a section of hair at the crown into a “warrior” knot and secures it with an elastic band. Some girls receive a wood nymph-appropriate headband as the final crowning glory to this “everything but the kitchen sink” style. “All of these little nuances—the part, the forgotten braid—make it interesting,” Irwin concludes. “It’s a little bit weird and dark, sure, but it’s still pretty.” —Karie L.
