VIP Tress Tales International artistic director for color at Keratin Complex, Deborah Gavin 68 Deborah Gavin, the new international artistic director for color at Keratin Complex (, has always told stories through hair— even when they were tales she didn’t want to recount. “As a child, my mom would home-perm my bright copper curls until I looked like Little Orphan Annie,” Gavin laughs. “I had to fight to find my own style.” That happened in high school, when the Philadelphia native fell in love with frequenting salons. “All the stylists seemed so happy, and I just wanted to be part of that world,” she recalls. Following a two-year college stint studying criminology and creative writing, Gavin realized that desire by signing up for hairdressing courses and scoring her first industry gig. “I was a shampoo girl at a spa called The Loft,” she recounts. “Color services were less popular at the time, but I gravitated in that direction and began building clientele.” The urge to constantly draft new chapters has helped define Gavin’s career. “I used to volunteer at every show and event, which is how I 2.13 became involved with Goldwell,” she explains. Now the colorist is crafting a new narrative, determined to accomplish the same pigment success that Keratin Complex previously achieved with its smoothing treatments. “I’m excited to be at the start of a special evolution in our industry,” Gavin enthuses. “I hope to create a new way of viewing color with this forwardthinking, family-oriented company.” Relationships are important to the wife and mother of two. Along with husband David, a firefighter, she calls daughters Zoe Isabella, 10, and Autumn Grace, 8, her proudest achievements. And despite constant travel and editorial obligations, she can still be found behind the chair three days a week, dying tresses at Fresh Hair Studio (Southampton, Pennsylvania), the salon she opened 10 years ago with best friend Laurie Haney. “We all have the power to change lives, but you can’t listen for a knock at the door,” Gavin reflects. “You have to push it open, and never say no to any opportunity.” —Francesca Moisin Images: courtesy of Keratin Complex Keratin Complex’s Deborah Gavin reflects on a lifelong relationship with hair.
