On the Cover En Pointe Aveda’s Antoinette Beenders creates wearable ballerina buns at Christian Siriano’s spring show—no tutu required. M icrosoft has Bill Gates. Chanel has Karl Lagerfeld. And Aveda has Antoinette Beenders. The Global Creative Director is synonymous with earthly, natural beauty, and has crafted countless catwalk hairstyles, including this month’s cover look from Christian Siriano’s spring/ summer 2013 collection. Beenders and Siriano set aside a few moments backstage to talk about the inspiration behind the fashion and hair. Christian, what inspired your spring/summer 2013 collection? The collection is inspired by ballet with a dreamy feeling. It’s what I imagine a dancer would wear during the day in her real life—at her job or around the city. It’s a tailored whimsy. Antoinette, how did you work with Christian to create the hairstyle? Christian’s collection this season is very romantic and pretty, yet tailored, so we created a look with a little less structure for contrast. It’s very wearable. What is the inspiration behind the style? The look we created is a ballerina’s bun that [is made to look like] she’s twisted up herself after she’s danced, perhaps on her way back from practice. GREEN BACKSTAGE Aveda instituted its Green Backstage program to prevent thousands of plastic water bottles from ending up in landfills. All partnering designers have agreed to replace bottled water with NYC tap water and eliminate fur. Additionally, Aveda provides all food, ensuring it’s organic and/or locally sourced. “It’s nice,” Siriano says of the program. “We’re not overusing plastic, and I think it’s wonderful that we can reuse something. I think it’s very important…especially when fashion is so wasteful.” 24 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | APRIL 2013 ANGELA WEISS/GETTY IMAGES How did you achieve the looks? First, we prepped hair with Pure Abundance Style Prep, then we used one of my favorite products, Light Elements Texturizing Creme. We then twisted the hair upright and around, twisted it in underneath, and then finished it off with Air Control Hair Spray.
