Trendsetters/A-List The Golden Child Leonard Zagami reveals his favorite styles for starlet Hayden Panettiere. — FRANCESCA MOISIN T hey met at a press junket when she was just 16 years old. NBC’s sci-fi series Heroes had recently launched, and Hayden Panettiere was a star poised to supernova. “She already had the presence of a mega celeb,” recalls Leonard Zagami, Creative Director at Manhattan’s Anthony Leonard Salon (anthonyleonardsalon. . com). “We hit it off from the start.” Fast-forward six years, and a close working relationship has bloomed between stylist and screen siren. As her East Coast hair guru, Zagami tousles the actress’s signature blonde tresses more than 30 times a year, creating iconic looks for glossy magazine spreads and redcarpet events, like the CMT Artists of the Year awards that Panettiere co-hosted with Rascal Flatts last December. “There were multiple style changes and timed sequences, so we were constantly on the move—with no room for error,” reveals Zagami. “I created a mini-kit for all my tools and easy-to-tote, travel-size products. It was very exciting!” With Panettiere’s turn as Juliette Barnes on ABC’s hit show Nashville, the sassy ingénue is fast becoming one of Tinseltown’s most sought-after leads. The look Zagami dubs the “Hollywood Blonde Bombshell” perhaps befits Panettiere best. This style is decadent and polished, in the vein of classic Golden Era beauties. “I blow out hair section by section with small dabs of volumizer, then twirl each chunk around extralarge Velcro rollers,” explains Zagami. “To finish, I brush using a Mason Pearson and spritz for volume with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray.” The more casual “Trendy Side Braid” is ideal for everyday glam. “My go-to Oribe Beautiful Color collection Shampoo, Conditioner and Masque enhance Hayden’s natural texture,” enthuses the stylist. Hair is braided extra-thick, with numerous strands left out so that it appears self-woven. Weight then gets distributed to the right side of her head, for a messy-chic creation. “We always work together as a team, collaborating with makeup master Amy Oresman to keep her young, fresh—and uniquely Hayden,” says Zagami. “I’ve watched her grow into a hardworking pro, but when the job is done, we always share a great laugh.” Hayden Panettiere We always work together a as a team. ” HAIR IS BRAIDED EXTRA-THICK, WITH NUMEROUS STRANDS LEFT OUT SO THAT IT APPEARS SELFWOVEN.
