Conversations/Salon of the Month 3 2 4 Green Dream Eco accents lend a homey vibe at Twig, an education-based salon. —Francesca Moisin O n a quest since 2009 to fill Carlsbad, California’s Twig Hair Lounge with earth-friendly products and paraphernalia, founder Jennifer Lechowicz has ensured that her 1,600-square-foot salon is among Southern California’s greenest—literally and figuratively. A dramatic living wall stuffed with ivy and waxy-leaved plants pleases both the eyes and lungs, bringing fresh oxygen indoors and drawing attention to the streamlined shampoo bowls above which it’s mounted. From Leucadia Home Furnishings, a screen crafted from salvaged 150-year-old trees partitions the shampoo lounge for privacy. The reception desk is also wood, this a cheery cherry, bought on Craigslist and revamped with the help of San Diego’s Homebird Upholstery. And Builders Trading Company, a local operation that reclaims surplus architectural detritus, is responsible for the former washbasins that now brim with merchandise, as well as the discarded doors Lechowicz morphed into display tables. “We try to minimize all waste by adopting the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle,” she laughs. The eco-chic innovations don’t stop there. Trusting only companies that staff chemists to develop organic products prompted the entrepreneur to partner with a select few care and color lines, all rooted in their commitment to sustainable beauty. Items are sold in bulk whenever possible, simultaneously saving money and plastic. Even paper has been almost entirely eliminated. “We use a chalkboard for guests’ tickets, and in the office a chalk wall tracks the training progress of intern designers,” reveals Lechowicz. Education is essential, and the salon’s in-house curriculum consists of 25 Tuesday morning classes. Completed during the course of a year, it’s the only way for newbies to earn floor time. Monthly training is also mandatory for all stylists, with ample encouragement to study at both national and overseas academies. “Only a sound foundation lends power to create trends and positively impact our world,” says Lechowicz.
