L :CHANNELING THE TREND The boho fishtail at Tory Burch exemplifies the Echo Trend. Each year, Wella Global Creative Directors Eugene Soulieman and Josh Wood divine four different trends that they believe will influence hairstyles for the coming year. Hence the spring 2013 Tory Burch show, which saw Souleiman drawing inspiration from the trend Echo. A reaction to the global current state of affairs, Echo represents a complicated and conflicted woman who has an affinity with romantic melancholy. At Tory Burch, the disheveled fishtails explore the dichotomy of chaos in a complicated look—a picture-perfect interpretation of Echo. 28 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2013 TOP: SLAVEN VLASIC/GETTY IMAGES; BOTTOM RIGHT & LEFT: KARL PROUSE/GETTY IMAGES ondon-born Stylist Eugene Souleiman is no stranger to conceptual art. After dropping out of art school in the early 1980s, Souleiman enrolled in vocational beauty courses and began apprenticing with Stylist Trevor Sorbie. His career truly launched when in 1995, he worked on a Jil Sander campaign. Today, having created looks for an extensive roster of designers that includes Calvin Klein, Missoni, Prada, Sander and now Tory Burch, saying he’s “comfortable” translating sartorial inspiration into beauty would be a major understatement. At Burch’s spring 2013 show, the texturally driven wheat motif lent itself to the models’ hairstyles simply—through loose fishtail braids. “It’s a little pulled apart, very relaxed and natural—which worked well with the bohemian spirit of Tory’s collection,” shares Souleiman. Cheery, spirited and fresh for spring, the braids channel Burch’s motif to a tee—not to mention the style’s own inherent benefits. “You can wrap the braid around the head, you can put it in knots, wrap it into a bun—you can do lots of things to it,” Souleiman relates. “Or you could just have a single braid down the back. That’s the great thing about this kind of hairstyle—it’s versatile.”
