T his look was a big risk because at New York Fashion Week, hair is usually styled into slick ponytails or low buns,” says Kien Hoang, Lead Stylist for Oribe Hair Care at Skaist Taylor, of the larger-than-life manes he and his team created for the designer’s spring 2013 runway show. Hoang says that the founders of Juicy Couture, Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela SkaistLevy, wanted a hairstyle that epitomized late ’60s/early ’70s Los Angeles rock stars, and he couldn’t have been happier. “They wanted movement and texture in the styles,” Hoang explains. “I suggested an afro, a more natural texture to embody the woman they were trying to create.” He and the team set the hair in tiny figure 8 designs all over the head: “It was very time-consuming.” After the hair was set, it was gently brushed to balloon it out. “The designers loved it!” Hoang exclaims. “The shape was big and round, reflecting rock-and-roll freedom.” But because the style was so intricate, Hoang says he is grateful he received so much help from the entire makeup crew in the few minutes leading up to the show. “It was a little crazy back there,” he says with a grin. We knew the hair was prepped properly and it bounced beautifully. Thank god it didn’t rain!” The runway was constructed out of reclaimed railroad ties, reflecting the bohemian spirit of the spring/ summer Skaist Taylor collection. MODEL PREP Foundation Mist: “It awakens the hair—a perfect primer.” Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray: “We sprayed the figure 8 sections after lightly tapping them with a flat iron to keep the hair looking natural without being unmanageable.” Dry Texturizing Spray: “To ensure the hair had huge volume that didn’t go flat on top, we sprayed Dry Texturizing Spray all over to blow up the style a bit more and keep the roots off the scalp.” 28 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JULY 2013 EARL GIBSON III/GETTY IMAGES Hoang knew the hair had to maintain its shape and bounce, so he chose Oribe products ( that left the hair with humidity protection without being too stiff:
