S ince Horst Rechelbacher founded the company more than three decades ago, Aveda has maintained its commitment to bettering the world at large through beauty and giving back. "Our brand is a culture and a lifestyle," says Aveda Global President Dominique Conseil. "Through our commitment to sustainability and our holistic approach, we bring out the unique beauty of each person in the chair." The latest crop of products to bolster this claim is Dry Remedy (, a line that's designed to drench dry, brittle strands with moisture. According to the company, three in 10 women have dry hair, making it the world's fourth most common hair concern. Tackling this problem head on, so to speak, are Dry Remedy Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner, Moisturizing Masque and Daily Moisturizing Oil, Aveda's first foray into the oils market. Each product is imbued with nourishing certified organic buriti oil, which is harvested from the Amazon's moriche palm- aka "the Tree of Life." "Immediately after using the regimen you can see the shine and feel the hydration and softness," says Tippi Shorter, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Textured Hair. "Buriti oil smells amazing and provides an instant luxe feeling to the hair." And if responsibly sourcing certified organic ingredients weren't enough eco-friendliness for you, consider this: The plastic packaging isn't plastic-at least not in the traditional petrochemical sense. Rather, the packaging for the Conditioner and Masque is made from a mix of post-consumer recycled materials and bioplastic, which is derived from renewable sugarcane rather than nonrenewable fossil fuels. Finally, Aveda is working with Beraca-a leading provider of natural ingredients sourced from Brazil-and Global Greengrants Fund to help change lives of those who reside where buriti oil is harvested: Piauí, Brazil. Drought-ravaged communities will receive assistance in purifying their water and in digging four new wells over the next two years to ensure that families can stay in the homes they love. "It's important to Aveda to give back to the people of Piauí," says Conseil. "Quite simply, it's our mission to care for the world we live in." The Dry Remedy Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner deliver the ultimate in moisture and leave strands softer and more manageable. "When hair is extremely dry and brittle, I like to apply Dry Remedy Moisturizing Masque around the hairline and on the ends-where it's the driest-for five to 10 minutes before shampooing," says Tippi Shorter, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Textured Hair. TIPPI'S TIPS Check out Shorter's advice on how to best use Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil for any hair type. For fine to medium straight hair: After blow-drying and styling, divide hair in half. Emulsify one to two drops in hands and smooth from mid-lengths to ends. Repeat on second half. On days when hair is not washed, halve amount of oil used. For medium to coarse straight hair or curly hair: Towel-dry hair and part in half. Emulsify one drop in hands and comb fingers from mid-lengths to ends. Repeat for second half. Blow-dry or diffuse hair. Then, emulsify one more drop and smooth from mid-lengths to ends. Repeat for second half. Use residual oil to gently smooth over the crown for more shine and fewer flyaways. On days when hair is not washed, halve amount of oil used. http://www.SEBASTIANPROFESSIONAL.COM
