Editor's Notebook CHROMA ® PERMANENT CREME COLOUR What's Old is New Again I am reminded of h a seemingly simple h i t h i d d f how i l i l haircut has the power to change a life. S CDP o I recently celebrated a birthday. Without giving too much away, let's just say it was a big enough milestone that my pregnant sister flew out from New York to help me celebrate. As part of the festivities, my sister and I decided to visit Joico's Cherry Petenbrink at her digs in West Hollywood, California's Salon Republic. I was tired of my haircut. I loved the color, but felt I needed a change from the long, side-parted style I have been wearing for some time (years, in fact). I was thinking, in short, of chopping it all off. But during the course of the conversation, my sister pointed out how unhappy she was that she couldn't rock a full fringe and mentioned that I had sported the style years prior. "Let's do it! Let's give you bangs!" Petenbrink exclaimed. The last time I sported fringe, I didn't own a flat iron (it was many moons ago), so my bangs ended up curling or parting like curtains on my forehead. Not a pretty sight. After some initial reluctance, a solemn assertion that I did not have any strange cowlicks and a promise that bangs make one look years younger, I made the cut. And ohmygod, how I loved it! I felt like a new woman. I have written about the transformative power a great cut or color can bestow, but truthfully, I hadn't experienced it myself firsthand in a very long time. I went out to dinner later that night with a renewed bounce in my step. Friends didn't recognize me at first, then gushed at how good I looked. I lapped up the praise like a cat. The following week, coworkers stopped me in the hallway and complimented my new fringe. I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face. But that's not all. My new 'do inspired me in other ways as well. I am applying my makeup differently. I have bought new clothes and revisited old favorites in new ways. Quite simply, my haircut has given me a new perspective on, well, me. Thank you Cherry for giving me a life-changing cut (and color!), and thanks to all of you who do the same, day in and day out, by always ensuring that your clients' inner beauty is reflected by their outer beauty. It really does mean the world.
