"We created a task force to determine what we could put on stage- that was the birth of this," says Lynch, now BCL President. "Our event asked 12 individuals- like Ted Gibson-to talk about what has been possible for them because they're beauty school graduates." The enthusiastic, emotional testimonials elicited such an outpouring of support that BCL evolved into a nonprofit, and initial fundraising events netted nearly $40,000 for future scholarships. The Vidal Sassoon Professional Beauty Education Scholarship, established by Wella Professionals' Hairdressers at Heart program and administered by BCL, honors Sassoon's legacy with a $1.5-million grant from Wella that will award 200 scholarships (40 per year) until 2017. Last fall, 10 aspiring stylists received basic scholarships that covered 50 percent of tuition at a qualified cosmetology school, while 10 licensed professionals received advanced scholarships for a five-day course at a North America-based Sassoon Academy, plus travel and accommodations, up to $5,000. "Our mission is powerful: to elevate, educate and expose people to careers and advanced education in beauty and wellness," Lynch beams. "It's very exciting to see the community at large respect and embrace this profession." The nonprofit also hosted the inaugural Legacy of Style event in 2012 to honor standouts in the industry; its first Lifetime Achievement Award went to Sassoon, whose daughter Eden accepted the award and read excerpts from his journal ("There wasn't a dry eye in the house from his passionate words," recalls Lynch). The foundation now disperses Massage Envy-sponsored scholarships for aspiring massage therapists, while CND's Jan Arnold raised $180,000 for nail tech scholarships to honor actress and activist Tippi Hedren's strides in the nail industry. "We really challenge everyone to define how they can be involved with BCL-by judging scholarship entrants, contributing donations or being part of our events," Lynch concludes. "BCL has really become the charity that unites the industry and makes us proud to be part of it."
