Trendsetters/Runway Report Still Life Models look as though they were "preserved in time in a glass box." Preservation SOCIETY P etrification isn't the easiest word to swallow, but when hairstylist Paul Hanlon speaks to the concept, it sounds oh-so glamorous. "The idea is preserved beauty," he explains backstage at Prabal Gurung. "It's almost like the [models] aren't human-as if they've been preserved in time in a glass box. Then, they've been given one minute to come out into the real world, and they can't sustain life outside of their glass box." If the concept sounds vaguely familiar, that's because Hanlon based it upon boundary-pushing contemporary artist Damien Hirst, who displays preserved animals in formaldehyde-filled glass boxes. To achieve the freeze-framed look, Hanlon first draws a deep side part and casts it in perfection via Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Softn' Straight Smooth Straightening Emulsion ( For a latex-like finish, he drenches strands from the roots to the neck with OSiS+ Freeze Strong Hold Hairspray, and blasts this area with heat to pack it tight to the head. For the lengths, Hanlon works OSiS+ Flatliner Flattening Iron Serum through the hair, molding branch-like waves using a straightening iron. As a final preserving touch, he mists the highly glossed finish with OSiS+ Sparkler Shine Spray. "It's an extreme view of beauty, almost like a mannequin," Hanlon admits, adding that the hair is more like liquid: "It's not even like hair anymore." Extreme, indeed-yet when each model emerged from her "glass box" (a plastic curtain) on the runway, the hair clearly stole the show. 74 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MARCH 2014 Hero Product Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Sparkler Shine Spray lends a vinyl look to the style.
