Don't mess with Madisen
O'Laughlin . The student who
There's nothing like experiencing
something first hand. Kimberly
Morales-Ortiz not only studied
nursing for her bachelor of science
degree at CU Nursing, she also
traveled to Guatemala to experience
global healthcare in The Trifinio
Project. For two weeks, she shadowed
4
nurses in Central America as they
cared for impoverished children and
families working in the local banana
and palm oil plantations. She even
made a vlog about her trip! MoralesOrtiz
observed how nurses there
focused on community building,
support and trust with their patients.
It was so impressive, MoralesOrtiz
plans to implement some of
those practices into her nursing
practice in the future! The Spanishspeaking
graduate also plans to
help diversify the nursing workforce
in the US which is still largely
Caucasian despite
a growing Hispanic
population. SCAN THE

ABOUT KIMBERLY.
is about to receive a bachelor of
science in nursing is also a black
belt in karate. While the two don't
seem to have a lot in common,
O'Laughlin says mastering selfdefense
and healthcare took
determination, hard work and grit to
get back up after getting knocked
down. She credits martial arts for
boosting her confidence and giving
her the mental strength to accept
more challenges. In fact, she plans
to tackle more nurse practitioner
programs in the future. The karate
master got her chops for nursing
from her grandfather. When she was
in grade school, her grandfather had
a lot of health problems. O'Laughlin
was grateful for the kind nurses who
cared for him. So, in high school,
she became a Certified Nursing
Assistant and worked in the assisted
living facility where
her grandfather was
receiving care. SCAN
