Bring it on. Billy Schwartz can take
it. The graduate is a former US Army
medic who served two tours of duty in
the Middle East. There, he won a Combat
Medical Badge and a Purple Heart for providing
emergency care to soldiers. Before attending CU Nursing,
Schwartz was a paramedic handling a variety of emergencies
for civilians. Both experiences taught him how to remain calm,
focused and personable with patients and their families and how
to de-escalate stressful situations. After he passes the state
licensing exam, Schwartz wants to work on the front line in an
intensive care unit treating children. His end game is to return
to CU Nursing at Anschutz one day and earn
a doctor of nursing practice degree. Hooah! " I
aspire to be the kind of nurse that I would trust
with my own family, " says the father of two.

Marie Stahl has wanted to be
a nurse ever since her mom took
her to " Take your child to work
day. " Then, she watched her mom
at Denver Health help make a
difference to people sick, wounded,
and pregnant. Now, her dream of
becoming a nurse is about to come
true as she walks across the stage
with a BSN. But it was not a straight
6
road to success. First, Stahl earned
a degree in sociology to learn social
norms and behaviors. Then, after
working in human resources for eight
years, she returned to her passion of
nursing and enrolled in CU Nursing's
Traditional Pathway BSN Program.
She says the two degrees remind
her to meet people where they're at
socially and economically as well
as physically. That lesson became
further engrained when Stahl
traveled to Guatemala for a class on
global health to treat
underserved families.
