Glance down at the logo on this year's tote bags and badge lanyards, and it is readily apparent that the journal will be commemorating its 70th anniversary in 2016. In fact, the 2015 ASH Annual Meeting marks the kickoff of an entire year of exploring the story of Blood and the landmark accomplishments and contributions of its many editors, reviewers, and authors through the years. No one is more enthusiastic about the coming year's fanfare than Blood Editor-in-Chief Dr. Bob Löwenberg. "Throughout the anniversary year 2016," he says, "each weekly issue of Blood will feature a 'Flashback' to one historical article published in the era of Blood's first 25 years that marks a seminal de- velopment in the field." He has also announced that six of the journal's Past-Editors, Drs. John W. Adamson, Arthur W. Nienhuis, James D. Griffin, Kenneth Kaushansky, Sanford J. Shattil, and Cynthia E. Dunbar (all successive Editors-in-Chief between 1983 and 2012), will contribute retrospective editorials to Blood recounting their unique experiences, as a reflection of their special and intense involvement with the evolution of the field. Seven decades ago in 1946, medical book publisher Henry M. Stratton, and Blood's first Editor-in-Chief Dr. William Dameshek, established the inaugural volume of the journal. This was a culmination of more than a century of consecutive hematologic breakthroughs. Between 1832 and 1944, hematology's forerunners detected the role of bone marrow in hematopoiesis; introduced blood staining techniques; discovered blood groups; and recorded the very first descriptions of numerous diseases including leukemia, sickle cell disease, von Willebrand disease, and macroglobulinemia. And in the years since that first edition, Blood has served its audience of dedicated investigators and clinicians across the globe and continued as a driving force for scientific innovation and discovery. "There is no way the founding editors could ever have foreseen its future growth »» BLOOD Page B-25 Reception to Honor 2016 ASH-AMFDP Awardees and 2015 MMSAP Participants T onight at 6:30 p.m., ASH invites all interested meeting attendees to the Promoting Minorities in Hematology Presentations and Reception, which will showcase training and research opportunities geared toward increasing the diversity of scholars in the field of hematology. One of the many highlights of the event will be the scientific presentations from the 2015 ASH Minority Medical Student Award Program (MMSAP) participants (see page B-14 for more on this year's winners). The reception will also feature poster presentations by students participating in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Minority Research Supplement, and the ASH-Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program (ASH-AMFDP) 2016 Award winners will be announced. The ASH-AMFDP award program is a partnership between ASH and the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Please join us at the Regency Ballroom O-P (Hyatt Regency Orlando) to hear the impressive research presentations and learn more about these exciting opportunities. The event will conclude with a buffet dinner and networking session (Regency Ballroom Q).
