2015 Wallace H. Coulter Award Honors the
Innovative Spirit of Dr. Aaron J. Marcus
T
oday, Aaron J. Marcus, MD,
will be recognized with the
Wallace H. Coulter Award for
Lifetime Achievement in Hematology for his groundbreaking research
in hemostasis and thrombosis, and
his remarkable dedication to the
field for almost 60 years. Dr. Marcus passed away in May 2015, and
his children will accept the award
on his behalf. Dr. Marcus served
as Chief of Hematology-Oncology
at the Veterans Affairs New York
Harbor Healthcare System and as
Attending Physician at New YorkPresbyterian Hospital, after working for years at Weill Cornell Medical College as Professor of Medicine,
and later as Professor of Medicine in

Clinical Investigation and
Basic Science, respectively.
ASH will present Drs. Kitchens and Civin with their

Dr. Kitchens is Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida (UF)
College of Medicine in Gainesville,
Florida. Aside from being a world
authority on thrombosis and disseminated intravascular coagulation, Dr. Kitchens has served as a
mentor for many students, resi-

dents, fellows, and faculty through
his role as Director of the Residency
Training Program and in multiple leadership positions at the VA
Medical Center. While he is described as intelligent, charismatic,
and extremely caring by those he
has mentored, Dr. Kitchens' exemplary work does not end at UF; in
addition to mentoring,
Dr. Kitchens and his
wife started a small
center in North Carolina to provide support for children living
with serious illnesses,
and their families. He
also chaperones and
advises a group of 20
medical students on
medical missions to
Nicaragua each year.
The success of his
trainees is proof of Dr.
Kitchens' dedication
and efficacy as a mentor; many currently hold positions
of leadership at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National
Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), among other prestigious academic centers around
