American Society of Hematology

he new crop of hematology
trainees has arrived and they
are more pumped than ever.
With recent scientific breakthroughs
in malignant, and nonmalignant
hematology alike, this year's trainees find themselves surrounded by
a wealth of new research and job
opportunities, and they couldn't
be more excited to embark on their
academic careers.
Yesterday, ASH held its annual
Trainee Day, a half-day workshop
that gives trainees access to worldrenown experts in hematology and
advice on varied topics from funding to career choices. This year's
Trainee Day agenda highlighted the
ever-changing hematology landscape, covering themes such as fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and choosing a post-training
career (including industry). These
topics underscore the fact that academic hematology is no longer limited to the two traditional tracks of
clinical trials and basic science.
Trainee Day Chair Dr. Angela
Smith stressed that good mentorship
is the cornerstone of any successful
hematologic academic career, regardless of the ultimate career path, and
that ASH Trainee Day is the first step
toward forging these lasting relationships. "Trainees need invested mentors who are willing and able to take
the time to educate and nurture them,
and they need the help of organizations like ASH to start that process."
In the first talk of the workshop,
Drs. Jennifer Woyach and Hal Broxmeyer led by example by coming together to present a Trainee Didactic
Session outlining the path to collaboration between clinical and laboratory researchers. They stressed that
maximizing these collaborative relationships is key to fruitful and productive research endeavors, especially in the era of translational and

genomic medicine. To further bring
this point home, breakout sessions in
basic, clinical, and translational science emphasized that hematologic
research is truly a team effort, requiring a strong leadership core to build
meaningful research partnerships.
A second breakout session featured experts from all walks of hematologic life, from traditional and
nontraditional academic positions,
to clinical practice and industry.
The goal of this session was to expose trainees to the vast and often
overlooked job opportunities for
academic hematologists. Even for
trainees looking to remain in the academic setting, the described roles
were anything but usual. Nonconventional academic positions such
as laboratory directors, research
managers, and fellowship directors
were discussed as a much-needed
alternative for those trainees whose
passions do not lie in traditional research pathways.
The final didactic session led by
Drs. Louis Pelus and Sophie Lanzkron also emphasized the nontraditional, this time with respect to
grant funding. They outlined the
rewards and challenges of different types of funding opportunities,
from conventional federal and foundation grants, to more contemporary patient-centered grants.
If you missed yesterday's Trainee Day events, have no fear! Today,
Career Development Lunch Sessions will be held in in the Sapphire
Ballrooms AB and EF of the Hilton
San Diego Bayfront from 11:15 a.m.
to 12:15 p.m. Additional Trainee Didactic Sessions will be held on Sunday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.,
and on Monday from 12:15 to 1:15
p.m. in Rooms 31 and 33 of the San
Diego Convention Center. So bring
your blue badge and your appetite!
