Dr. Majhail is often asked how
he finds time to dedicate to Twitter,
but the super-user admits that it's
just a part of his usual, everyday
workflow, "in between patients, on
the elevator, walking to a meeting
or inpatient unit, etc. A great time
to tweet is when you are in meetings or conference calls, especially when you would rather not be
there, but have to be ... if you can
read and understand what is published in ASH News Daily, Twitter

will be a piece of cake."
Well, as you can see, there is
no "Hamlet"-style indecision here
at the annual meeting. It is full
speed ahead when it comes to social media use in hematology. Hematologists are quickly coalescing
around the idea of picking up a
smartphone, tablet, or even engaging via that most old-fashioned of
devices, the desktop computer. The
modern era for social media in hematology appears to be upon us.
Of course, as with any new form
of media or technology, there can
and will be pitfalls and missteps
in this uncharted, unprecedented
new way to communicate. When
asked about the future of Twitter
and social media in our field, Dr.
Thompson reflected on these vital
issues to the field, and on where we
have been and where we need to
go, saying, "We need to move from
a 'wild West' mentality to trying to
understand the 'use cases' for how
social media can improve patient,
physician, and other types of education. Increasing understanding
and critical thinking is key to improving our meeting and our society. If social media is of value, we
need to protect it from becoming
just another marketing tool."
Dr. Pemmaraju indicated no relevant
conflicts of interest.
