natural thrombopoeitin (TPO)
on hematopoietic stem and
progenitor cells (HSPC) in severe
aplastic anema (SAA) has eluded
hematologists. This phenomenon
was made only more mysterious
by the apparent ability of eltrombopag, a c-MPL agonist, to resurrect
hematopoiesis despite binding to
the same receptor as TPO. In their
unprecedented Plenary Scientific
Session abstract "Heterodimerization of TPO and IFNγ Impairs Human Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cell Signaling and Survival in
Chronic Inflammation," Dr. Luigi
J. Alvarado and colleagues at the
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
described the mechanism behind
this paradox, implicating a debili-

cell-type-specific transcription factors were found in high density in
super-enhancers. This established
that super-enhancers were critical
in the control of mammalian cell

chromosomal rearrangements juxtapose super-enhancers with genes
critical to the neoplastic phenotype.
