When Fearlessness Pays Off
Dr. Benjamin L. Ebert
Wins 2017 William
Dameshek Prize

enjamin L. Ebert, MD, PhD,
of Harvard Medical School,
Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has been awarded the 2017
William Dameshek Prize. This
award, named after the late William Dameshek, MD, a past president of ASH and the original editor
of Blood, is awarded to an early- or
mid-career hematologist who has
made a recent outstanding contribution to the field of hematology.
Dr. Ebert is professor of medicine at
Harvard Medical School; he serves
as leader of the leukemia program
for the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, an institute member at
the Broad Institute, and associate

physician at Brigham and Women's
Hospital. He was also recently appointed chair of medical oncology
at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

His work in describing the genomic
landscape of adult myelodysplastic
syndromes (MDS), including identifying critical new roles for ribosomal dysfunction, has earned him
this recognition.
Dr. Ebert was thrilled to learn
that he would receive the William Dameshek Prize. "ASH has
provided my primary intellectual
home since I was a postdoctoral
fellow. I have enjoyed every opportunity to work with ASH and feel
particularly honored to receive an
award from the Society." In terms
of scientific accomplishments and
recognition, Dr. Ebert is responsible
for identifying RPS14 as a key gene
for deletion 5q MDS. His laboratory
discovered the molecular basis of
lenalidomide activity in MDS and

2017 Stratton Medal Winners
Underscore the Importance of
Mentors and Feeding One's Curiosity

herrill J. Slichter, MD, of
Bloodworks Northwest and
the University of Washington,
and Josef T. Prchal, MD, of the University of Utah, have been awarded
the 2017 Henry M. Stratton Medal
for their pivotal contributions in the
areas of clinical/translational and
basic hematology research, respectively. This ASH award is named after the late Henry Maurice Stratton,
co-founder of Grune and Stratton,
the publishing house that first published ASH's journal Blood. They
will be presented with the Stratton
Medal on Tuesday, December 12,
2017, at 9:30 a.m. during the Announcement of Awards Ceremony
(Georgia World Congress Center,
Hall C2-C3).

attle. Dr. Slichter was not focused
on hematology during her training
period, but when a young woman
came into clinic with hemolytic
uremic syndrome (Jack in the Box
contamination) in renal failure and
urgent need of dialysis, things took
an interesting turn. Dr. Slichter con-

sulted with a doctor in charge of the
only dialysis machine in the hospital at the time and offered to do
the process with a catheter, but the
patient unfortunately passed away.
She then found the person in charge
