CRTI-LA Starts a New Cycle Next Fall
Mark Your Calendars:
The Next Application Cycle
Begins in September 2018

arlier this year, ASH announced the names of 23
hematologists participating
in the 2017 ASH Clinical Research
Training Institute in Latin America
(CRTI-LA). This education and
mentorship program was held
April 5-6, 2017, in Uruguay, just
prior to the Society's Highlights of
ASH meeting in Latin America. It
is designed to prepare current hematology fellows and junior faculty

members working in Latin America
for careers in clinical research.
During the two-day program,
ASH member experts from around
the world introduced CRTI-LA participants to the fundamentals of clinical trial design through educational
sessions on topics such as biostatistics, developing clinical research
questions, and writing an abstract
and manuscript for publication.
Small group breakout sessions gave
participants chances to network and
discuss potential projects one-onone with CRTI-LA faculty.

effective antithrombotic agents that
do not cause bleeding; and 3) identifying biomarkers for prediction of
disease.
Regarding epigenetic mechanisms, the research agenda will
now focus more sharply on: 1)
targeting malignant histone modifications and 2) developing tools
for locus-specific epigenetic reprogramming. Research in these added
areas will enhance the understanding of epigenetic mechanisms and
their role as potential targets for the
treatment of various hematologic
disorders such as sickle cell disease,
thalassemia, and various hematologic malignancies.
Finally, updated priorities related to stem cell biology and regenerative medicine underscore the understanding of hematopoietic stem
cell biology and developing safe
and effective stem cell-based therapies. Specific updated priorities 1)
characterize hematopoietic stem
cell biology; 2) develop an artificial
and functional hematopoietic stem
cell niche that allows expansion of
repopulating hematopoietic stem
cells; and 3) advance "designer" hematopoietic cell products as well as
facilitate their large-scale production for therapeutic and diagnostic
use.
The ASH Agenda for Hematology Research may be considered a
reference to the entire hematology
community - one that can be used
as a resource for publications, grant
applications, and other efforts. On
the whole, the agenda represents
some of the most promising strategies to help hematologists overcome
the limitations of current therapies
and accelerate momentum to find
