a nyone interested in seeing firsthand the power of architecture should visit Toronto. In the last four years, the city has been transformed by a series of projects, mostly cultural, designed by some of the leading practitioners in the world. The list includes many of the usual suspects, from Frank Gehry and Norman Foster to Will Alsop and Daniel Libeskind. Though most of the building comes in the form of additions and expansions, the cumulative effect is profound. Toronto is not the city it used to be. So far, the most controversial scheme has been the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal at the Royal Ontario Museum. Designed by Daniel Libeskind before he got the World Trade Center commission in New York in 2003 but after the Jewish Museum opened in Berlin o 38 toronto | 2008 in 1995, the Crystal has all the in-your-face angularity one would expect of the architect. Its multifaceted glass and aluminum façade reaches out over Bloor Street, allowing unprecedented views into the building. Though it stands in complete contrast to the museum’s original two wings, built in 1914 and 1933, the Crystal acts as a foil to both; its minimalist surfaces highlight the ornately carved stone exteriors. Inside, Libeskind has created a series of large open spaces that feel connected to one another, yet separate. Before the reopening of the ROM in 2007, much of the city’s attention was on Will Alsop’s “flying tabletop” at the Ontario College of Art & Design. It too was disparaged when unveiled in 2004, but has since become one of the city’s most popular architectural icons. The two-storey structure, held aloft by 12 coloured “stilts,” has established itself as a symbol of the new Toronto. And despite its playfulness, the English architect’s project met a number of practical concerns; not only did it mean OCAD didn’t have to close during construction, it meant that Grange Park to the west could be dragged through to McCaul Street which the college faces. The jewel of the city’s cultural projects, however, is the smallest, the Gardiner Museum. The original building, designed in the 1980s, was an apologetic Modernist undertaking, now brought to life by one of Toronto’s leading architectural firms — Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB). In its new incarnation, the Gardiner ranks among the finest and most urban spaces in the city. Situated across Queen’s Park Road from the ROM, it’s delicately part of its surroundings, as fully engaged as a cultural institution can be. KPMB also designed the National Ballet School of Canada on Jarvis Street. This $100-million addition has won any number of awards and it’s not hard to understand why. Rarely has a new building/renovation been so seamlessly integrated into its setting, in this case a 19th-century neighbourhood that’s due for an upgrade. The desire for transparency is best seen in the glass-fronted tower that contains seven storeys of dance studios, easily visible to passersby. f all the cultural projects, however, it will likely be Gehry’s remake of the Art Gallery of Ontario that wins the hearts and minds of Torontonians. Though it won’t be finished until late 2008, it has already been widely praised. The most spectacular feature is the glazed atrium, Galleria Italia, which extends along the entire front of the building like a giant visor. The AGO will also feature several of the curved stairwells favoured by Gehry.
