OFFICE OF PAY AND RETIREMENT SERVICES
HOW WE ARE SUCCEEDING

THE OPRS COVID-19
PANDEMIC EXPERIENCE
By OPRS Team

T

to support several agencies.
One of the biggest challenges
we face is making sure everyone feels connected.  We try to
over communicate. In addition
to the usual weekly staff meetings with direct reports, we
have regular all-hands meetings, making them "events"
with fun interactive activities,
in addition to providing important updates on projects, initiatives and results. The leadership team is not the only ones
making presentations. All staff
have the opportunity to share
items of value for everyone. In
addition, we have smaller
gatherings, check-ins and
continue to maintain the "rituals" we had in the office the
best we can virtually, recognizing and employing SMARTER
values. *

he Office of Pay and Retirement Services (OPRS)
is responsible for the District's extremely complex
payroll and retirement operations. We process multiple bi-weekly and monthly payrolls for 36,000+ active
District employees, 800 Workers' Compensation
recipients, 3,500+ U.S Secret Service and Park Police
retirees and/or annuitants and third party-participants
in special training programs.
OPRS receives and processes retirement paperwork for all District Civil Service benefit participants,
police officers, fire fighters, and public-school teachers. OPRS also administers the federal benefits open
season for members of the US Park Police and Secret
Service. During this open season, which is held annually, individuals are able to make selections among
various health, dental and vision packages. Other
payroll functions include making supplemental payments to employees for wages earned, additional pay,
retroactive payments for salary/rate changes, backpay
as may be directed by agreements, settlements and
court orders to identified individuals, and third party
payments to vendors for employee benefits such as
health, dental, life, and vision insurance plans and
union dues as applicable.
