The Bottom Line - Fall 2020 - 34

EDRC CONTINUED
To prepare for the class, the list of ingredients was sent to the cluster a week prior to
ensure that everyone had adequate time to
get them. During the class, Bianca offered
tips for substitutes for some ingredients in
the event a member of the team did not have
everything that was needed. This proved to
be critical as some were unable to get all of
the ingredients in advance; therefore, flexibility was key. The class was very interactive; although Bianca was leading the class,
members of the team asked questions and
some shared how they cooked the same
dish with slight variations. Roland McAllister,
Revenue Accounting Manager, channeled his
New Orleans roots as he prepared his dish
while offering his input on how he would normally prepare shrimp and grits. Additionally,
Reginald Wilson and Julia May contributed
their thoughts as well. This allowed for the
sharing of ideas which were incorporated in
the class. Ultimately, the goal was for each
participant to cook a most delicious shrimp
and grits, and the sharing of ideas was critical to the success of the class. Together,
virtually, the class chopped, and stirred, and
sprinkled, and sautéed, and cooked until -
finally -- each masterpiece was completed.
The participants then plated the shrimp and
grits and presented the final chef-d'oeuvre
to the rest of the class on the screen so that
the team could celebrate the success of their

colleagues. Finally, all who cooked were able
to enjoy what they had created. This recipe
for haute cuisine and collegiality is much like
our response to the pandemic.
On Tuesday March 10, 2020, an email was
sent to the EDRC to determine how many
members of the team had VPN access. Two
days later, the cluster held a conference
call to discuss the unthinkable... the possibility of the entire OCFO working remotely
for the next few weeks. During the call the
primary concern was ensuring that operations would be able to continue for the short
term. Is there a current directory with correct
contact information outside of the office,
does everyone know how to utilize Acrobat
Reader to sign documents, does everyone have access to MS Teams, PeopleSoft,
SOAR, and PASS through the VPN, and
is the team positioned to process payments remotely? The Chief of Management
Operations, Joscaira Akhran, worked with
various members of the staff to help them
set up electronic signatures in Acrobat
Reader. A plan was developed for processing payment receipts... The cluster was then
ready to work remotely for the expected two
weeks should the office close.
March 16, 2020, the OCFO transitioned
to working remotely with an expected return
