ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND REGULATION
HOW WE ARE SUCCEEDING
EDRC CONTINUED
the sharing of ideas on how the team would
function best. As what was originally going to
be a two to three-week adjustment became
more of the norm, the team discussed ways
to function long-term more effectively. Yes,
these meetings were meant to ensure that
operations continued to function smoothly,
but more importantly these frequent meetings kept everyone connected. As the key
ingredient it was important that regardless
of physical location, no one felt distanced
from the team. This also proved beneficial as
new members were welcomed to the cluster.
Since shifting operations to working remotely,
two new hires were onboarded; Accounts
Payable Technician LaChanda Jones, and
Accountant Emanuel Penny. The cluster held
a virtual meet and greet to welcome the new
members to the team, which helped them
make a smooth transition into their new roles.
The next key ingredient has been technology. Microsoft Teams has been invaluable.
The team also placed more reliance on using
OneDrive to share and edit documents and,
for the first time, AFOs had to participate in
virtual budget hearings utilizing Zoom, and
the cluster has implemented periodic "twenty
minute tidbits," abbreviated virtual training
sessions on a short topic open to each team
member. The staff now approves documents
electronically in Acrobat Reader, which has

led to efficiencies in processing. The use of
technology has actually led to better collaboration across teams within the cluster.
The first two ingredients while key, without
the last ingredient would have left the entrée
tasting bitter. Something would have been
missing... The success of the cluster has
required the last key ingredient... the rest of
the OCFO. When COVID relief funds needed
to be disbursed quickly to community organizations, Clarice Wood, Joseph Cobb and
Michelle Mosby from the Office of Finance
and Treasury worked with members of the
EDRC Accounts Payable team LaShawn
VanHorne and Kelvica Singletary to expedite
wire payments which enhanced the taste of
the cluster's success, when the budget process was turned inside out and upside down,
Eric Cannady and the team at the Office of
Budget and Planning sprinkled in outstanding guidance, the Office of Human Resources
helped EDRC onboard two new members of
the team so that they could quickly marinate
in the culture, the responsiveness and outstanding service of OCIO has helped ensure
that hard drives are not fried, and if they
are, the team has not suffered downtime.
Lastly, the leadership of the OCFO has been
thoughtful, strategic, and compassionate,
which has made sure that the dish is perfectly prepared, tender, and warm. *
